AACN Essential Competencies, Coursework Example

This exercise has been instrumental in enabling me to address a number of learning objectives that have been critical to my growth and development as a doctoral-level nurse. The required exercise involving the table offered a number of benefits, as it addressed the importance of the Essential Competencies established by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2006). From this perspective, I have acquired new skills and knowledge that will support my ability to transition into a leader within the nursing profession who will have a significant impact on the direction of the profession over the long term. It is important to summarize information in a table format as a means of understanding the needs of the patient population and in learning how to integrate knowledge learned in different subject areas so that expert knowledge and resources are transferred into the practice environment.

This table has also provided me with a comprehensive summary of how the essential competencies that I have acquired may be applied in the nursing work environment in different ways in order to meet the expectations of the profession and my continued growth and development. In this capacity, I believe that my learning will continue throughout my professional career and will enable me to acquire new forms of knowledge through experience and practical applications of skills and techniques. In addition, in the DNP role, I will expand my skillset through my understanding of how to address problem-solving through advanced leadership and opportunities for growth and satisfaction that will have a lasting impact on the profession (Michigan Health Council, 2015). From this perspective, I must be able to apply my education in a practical context and to be mindful of the challenges that I may face as I continue to explore the options that are available throughout my career in an advanced practice role. This will enable me to address the challenges of the nursing profession and to utilize my education to bridge gaps that exist between knowledge and the actual practice environment.
