The analysis of variance (ANOVA) represents a means of examining the different means of three groups or more that require further evaluation, using variances to determine their significance (Polit & Beck, 2012). Specific examples involving clinical or scientific principles are likely to benefit from an ANOVA analysis because it brings different groups together in order to develop comparisons that will identify the validity and direction of the research question. This is an important tool in the development of new approaches to understand important research questions that impact different subject areas. ANOVA is likely to have an impact in these areas because it provides a level of variation that is necessary to conduct a comparison that will potentially impact the outcomes of the study.

The multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) offers a different type of approach that examines multiple variables that will determine the overall impact of multiple independent variables and how they impact the research question and its intent (Polit & Beck, 2012; Mertler & Vannatta, 2013). The determination of multiple independent variables is the critical factor to consider and requires a selection of variables that will have the greatest impact on the overall direction of the data analysis. It is important to identify variables that will generate desirable results, but to also recognize the benefits of this type of analysis in order to determine the value of multiple independent variables in order to support the desired outcomes. Therefore, these variables must be carefully selected in order to determine whether or not they provide value to the research in question. These tools are likely to be useful in answering questions where several variables are involved that may be similar or different in nature and must be compared in order to determine their efficacy and overall value to the research and to the clinical or scientific practice in question.
