An Application to a Master of Fine Arts at the Piet Zwart Institute in Rotterdam, Cover Letter Example

Dear Sir/Madam,

I have enclosed my application to the Master of Fine Arts programme for your consideration.

My academic, professional and artistic background in photography, cultural studies, and mixed media has led me to develop an aesthetic approach that seeks to blend the mundane details of everyday life with aspects of the surreal and ludicrous.  I have a BFA in photography from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, and my academic pursuits have assisted me in investigating the myriad of collisions that occur between the ‘real’ and ‘unreal’.  Most recently, I’ve been exploring such natural/unnatural interactions as they take place in the mediated realm of the Internet, where media often plays a pivotal role in dictating the experiences of users/audiences.  In response to this, my mixed media projects attempt to situate the individual (often through the use of my self as a subject) in a variety of commonplace environments.  Through digital imaging and web design, I then attempt to re-represent and re-create this subject/object relationship to comment on the role media plays in the creation of personae.

I have had exhibitions of my work in Europe and North America, and have been published in several magazines and collections.  I am excited at the opportunity to study at the Piet Zwart Institute so that I might continue my critical explorations of new media, gain insight into the place held by high and low art in technology, and collaboratively engage with others in the field.
