Term Paper

Thesis statement:

Today’s society lives in a media-enabled environment that directly affects the attitudes and values of young children (Giles, 25) Due to excessive exposure [to altering the originality of culture (Uncl)] in three major states: The advancement of technology, the growth of media corporations, and mainstream advertisement, making it incredibly important to choose media sources wisely. [This is almost unintelligible. In any case it’s too vague and doesn’t seem to me to have a polemical point to make. Is your argument that children should be discrete about which media sources they expose themselves to? If so then why so, what are the issues and concepts in play, and finally what can be done about this and/Or what are the implications of this situation or further thinking we should be doing in response to it? You have not developed an clear and focused argument here; Indeed, I’m not even sure there is an unfocused argument here.]

Description of strategy:

I intend to first briefly define what [exactly is harmful and unhealthy with regards to children (You mean in the world at large or what? And explain why you’d begin like this)]. I will first address technological advancement, and how it has made [accessibility to inappropriate content much more accessible (Uncl: Accessibility is accessible? What does this mean?)]. [“The immediate option is to watch television, play video games and listen to music”, (Lasn, 63). (SF).]

Citing specific examples, with use of graphic and controversial video games such as grand theft auto, TV shows such as south park, as well as the violent and horrifying images the media portrays. Advertisement’s role will also be discussed, citing things such as cigarette and alcohol commercials.

It is also necessary to take the converse into account, and in the paper I intend to break down arguments against by presenting them. For example, easy and quick flow of information that is useful to society and education would not have been possible if technology or media was not in existence (Williams 24). It is true the media certainly helps in the transfer of information, however, this information is not always information a child should have access to.

My conclusion will certainly be that it is up to the parents to decide the individual maturity of their child, and allow them exposure proportionate with that information. The spread of negative information however, and this will be made clear, is completely codependent on the very technology that helped advance our culture–making media censorship a true “catch-22”.
