Some cases are manifested with outward symptoms. Others simply test positive histological. Researchers estimated there were over 70 million cases of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) in men ages 50+ in the US, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and the UK in 2010 (PR Newswire, 2011, August 8). About half were symptomatic (PR Newswire, 2011, August 8). Researchers also estimated nearly a third of the cases were in the US (PR Newswire, 2011, August 8).

One of the benefits of the study are that researchers better understanding the probabilities upon which to base a longitudinal forecast of prevailing cases of BPH (PR Newswire, 2011, August 8). Researchers expect to see BPH histological cases to increase to nearly 100 million by 2020 and the number of symptomatic BPH cases to nearly 50 million (PR Newswire, 2011, August 8). In the U.S., this means an increase of about 2.3% annually. Traditionally, the cohort of men over 50 are at the highest risk for developing prostate cancer.

BHP is believed to be a precursor to prostate cancer. Here, statistical measures of benign prostatic hyperplasia have been discussed.
