How China’s Approach to Intelligence Differs from that of the U.S.

When it comes to intelligence and national security, China takes a whole-of-government approach. Nothing is off-limits, and every citizen is expected to assist the regime in its endeavors (Giglio, 2019). A law exists that requires all individuals and organizations to cooperate with the military and security services and share any technological or informational resources to which they may have access. In contrast to American intelligence, Chinese security services, and companies have proven to be highly adept at stealing technology from other countries through various methods, ranging from cyberattacks to more traditional human intelligence-gathering methods.

China’s Benefits Over Western Intelligence Outfits

Today, China has numerous benefits over the Western intelligence outfits because it has embraced AI technologies. In the future, the engines of economic growth and national security will be AI technology. China is not only catching up, from facial recognition and financial technology to drones and networks of the fifth generation. In far too many circumstances, the United States as the unchallenged leader in global economic development has already been overcome. Depending on the situation, the United States may choose to forfeit a race out of respect for constitutional constraints and differing values.

Anyone who wasn’t paying attention probably missed China’s AI boom. In the 2015 evaluation of their international rivalry by Google, Microsoft, Facebook, and Amazon, the Chinese companies rated third behind German or French companies (Allison, 2020). In 2016, DeepMind, the premier AI application company, built a machine in the most complex board game on earth that defeated Lee Sedol (Allison, 2020). According to most Chinese, machines defeated the world’s chess champions, but the world’s Go champions were unbeatable.
