Concept Map of Self-Care of Chronic Illness, Coursework Example

Purpose Statement

Self-care is executed in situations where people do not have chronic diseases. This concept map however, demonstrates self-care concepts when chronic diseases such as diabetes exist by applying middle range theoretical perspectives.

The concept map below highlights concepts contained in middle ranger self-care theory and the current development of chronic disease middle range theory. As depicted on the map self-care theories began with middle range assumptions contained in Orem’s theory. According to these assumptions specific self-care pertaining to chronic disease management was exempted from considerations(Gravely, Tamim,  Smith, Daly& Grace, 2011). While assumptions and propositions may be similar a wide range of differences occur as it relates to processes underlying self-care outside of chronic disease and factors affecting self-care when viewed from the chronic disease perspective (Galdas, Ratner  &  Oliffe, 2011).

These include experience and skill cultural beliefs and values among many other factors as depicted in the map. As it relates to the middle range self-care distinct from chronic disease the process underlying self-care is a simple decision whether to be engaged in the process to not (Greenhalgh, Collard & Campbell-Richards, 2011). However, in chronic disease conditions such as diabetes and heart failure accessibility to self-care is a major obstacle in itself to receiving the intervention. As such, from this concept map presentation theoretically self-care in chronic disease need further research towards a realistic theory of self-care in chronic disease conditions ( van der Wal, Jaarsma, Moser, van Gilst., & van Veldhuisen , 2010).
