Don Juan love life, unlike the true lovers, love lives is more complicated since the kind of love he has is sensuous and not physical. He is a seducer from the ground up, and that doesn’t change all through. Sensuous love according to this particular concept is faithless, and the person can cheat countless time without feeling guilty. Juan is a kind of person that loves all and not one specific person. His love exists at the moment, and that is why all through the play he keeps running without caring about the women he leaves behind. All he cares about is himself and his life. From the book by Kierkegaard, it is clear from Juan speech that he is longing for womanhood. The voice heard is a voice of sensuousness and he never reaches the end of his love journey as he loves the moment. He is this kind of person who sees and loves immediately, and after the moment he is starting over again with someone different.
His love life is an epic which comes time without numbers and can only be expressed as music that sings without fading. The objects of love who thinks they have poured all their hearts to loving Juan get disappointed at the end. Despite all the above stories of love and the kind of person Juan is when it comes love, it is still not enough reason why he can be judged for being unreligious. Christianity is not all about love but incorporates other good qualities which Juan got. This paper will explore the religiousness of Don Juan and some of the opposing points as well to test his behavior.
To start with, Juan has personnel that is loveable and attractive to women, and he can’t help it because he didn’t choose it is Gods making. He also had some great powers in him that draw people to him. It is said that his powers could not be expressed in language but music. Juan brought happiness to people. For instance, in his wedding with Zerlina, Juan told everyone to wear their best dresses as if they were all getting married and on this day he treated all the maidens with honor and flattery. All his mystery power focused on the girls and made them comfortable and happy even when it wasn’t their day. As he was headed to the wedding, he comes across children who looked so beautiful in their dresses and complimented them. This is to show that Juan wasn’t an animal at all as people may think of him. He was humble enough to notice small children on his way. Sex is on Juan’s path of life. It is fate, and that does not entirely mean someone is evil. That is why in this case, he doesn’t use the princess who wanted him for sex. This is to show that he also loved and he didn’t involve himself in sexual behaviors where he didn’t like someone.
Also, after the shipwreck, Dom Juan who was the survivor in entering the man land, he was encountered Charlotte who was a peasant, and this woman loved him. Charlotte was married, but she didn’t care about that since she thought she had feelings for Juan. Juan on the other hand, as usual, could not turn her down because he thought he did feel the same. Another peasant came along making Juan lovers two and Juan as seducing as he always was managed to promise all of the marriage which they believed in. Juan didn’t stay in the town for long because he was pursued by some riders and therefore he had to flee leaving behind these two women who were so much into him. Religious people could see this as an act of treason and can blame Juan for cheating on these women but Juan was just doing what was right for him, and that is running for his life. It was not his call to choose who to love him, and in every place, he went he find a woman who loved him not because he said something or lied to be convinced but just loved Juan. He was, and that means there was something good that God put in Juan that people loved so much( Mandrell, 2010).
Don Juan participated in the Russian war, and he sided with the Russian army which won at last. This made Juan a hero of the war. After this, he met Catherine who loved her at first sight. Catherine loves Juan to the extent of giving all the riches and trusting him enough to send him to England as the Russian ambassador. Don doesn’t know what to do to make Catherine happy or rather thank her for everything she has done for him. The mistake that Catherine made is sending Juan away to England, and since he had kind of a love charm, he reaches there and meets another woman again this time a married one again. This is one of the problems Juan had. He fell in love with other men wives, and that is a weakness that portrayed him as an evil figure.
Having considered that, there are also somethings that Juan does and to some extend invalidate his actions and his behaviors. First, it is not anyone’s call to choose who will love them, but everyone has to make a choice who to love. This is one call that Juan never makes and in every situation where a woman loved him, he just gets involved even when he knew that they were other people’s wives. The bible is against that, and so is the church or the religious society. He acted out of lust to satisfy his sexual urges not knowing what that will cost him. That’s is why he is on the run from the start because he chose that life when he decided to run with someone’s wife in the name of love. He is pursued with people, and no matter how far he goes, those people will not stop coming for him.
Something about Juan which is unreligious is his hypocritical nature. In the last scene, his father who is thought to be dead comes back in his life. Juan deceives his father by playing a good son and religious for that matter who can repent his sins by announcing his recent conversion. The father felt thankful after seeing the revelations and thought he knew his son. When the father is gone, he then tells his valet the whole truth that whatever he was telling his father and showing him was all a make-up which he used as a mask to get rid of his father and be able to continue with his life of debauchery. Juan is hypocritical, and any bible doesn’t entertain hypocrisy but wants followers with clean hearts and minds, not fake ones.
In conclusion, in as much as people would want to be so much judgmental and play the holy people in the world, Juan also has a soft spot in his heart, and that makes him religious. All through the play, Juan is never heard to have threatened anyone life and the only person being threatened is himself. He lived in a fancy life full of women the thing he desired the most in his life. As the writer explained his love life, is the kind of love that is not physical but sensuous love. A kind of love that didn’t need commitment and this he was so clear. The subject of his love failed to understand him, and that is what brought issues. Women were being lured to his trap because of the sweet voice he used in flattering them and his eyes which were tempting. The supernatural power in him made him some god and can’t be resisted. Just because Juan worked so hard to get what he desired the most doesn’t make him unreligious. In the play, Juan was even willing to run with some of his lovers and that indicates that to some extent his love was real and physical. It is therefore clear that Juan was a religious man despite the kind of love life he had. (Word count, 1378)
