A university education should be free for all students who complete high school. The higher education should be free to any student who successfully finish the high school and should never be a privilege but rather a right. Establishing a university education, a privilege for some few student is an irrational reasoning since not everyone enjoys such privilege. The current high cost of university education means that less and fewer learners will access the higher education that is bad for labor force and the ultimate economic growth. The available aid is inadequate to cater or cover the rising cost that has also increased the students’ liabilities or debts. The learners can only borrow some restricted money that will not put them under stress and pressure to pay in their lives. The parents cannot meet the fees of their respective children or take the loans adequate to pay for them school fees. They may have terrible credit to cosign to borrow the students loans that have double the rates of university dropouts as the charges heightened about the little income and aid available for the scholars. The corrective intervention is that university education should be free to the students who have completed their high school based on the following premises.
Positive Externality for Higher Education
The university education offers significant external benefits to the society. The free higher education for all students who complete high school culminates in a more educated and productive workforce. The individual nations with the high rates of university education showcase high levels of innovation and productive growth. There is a justification for every government to subsidize the university education. There is much evidence to show that people with degrees have better health and happiness besides the need for the educated workforce. The free university has also led to a reduction of crime rates and higher degrees of social welfare. President Obama attempts to increase the university graduates has not achieved much since petite is done to drive the initiative. The federal government can fund the university education alongside reining in costs by establishing the realistic caps on rises in tuition fees. The government will also enhance the quality of instruction through the improvement of access and affordability of the university education by forcing the schools to focus their expenditure on research and instructions. The free university will also be attainable by shifting from the lavish amenities costs to the concertation of universities’ resources on declining the class-sizes alongside hiring full-time faculty.
Equality
The free education for those who have completed their high school has a greater potential to promote equality of opportunity. Many students are dissuaded to drop or avoid university education when forced to pay the unattainable rising costs of university education and locking out sufficient brains in the labor market that impede economic growth and development. The concept or the theory of loan availability for students and part-time jobs to finance their education is another automatic discouraging factor amongst many students. This notion has discouraged many student who has ended up in the job markets rather than pursuing higher education to avoid the stress and pressure attached to these loans. In the state of California, for instance, as the scholars get priced out of the University of California, the learners either go to community schools with low-grade rates or drop out which is hazardous to the labor market. The present proportion of American graduates who start universities and complete is pegged at 30% that is an explicit representation of the massive waste of money and time. The graduation rates are low because the students have to supplement their fees with part-time jobs, and this can drastically improve with the implementation of the free University for the high school graduates. This strategy will also reduce the number of years from the current six or more to four which further saves on the cost of university education which is the primary impediment for increased university drop out or low uptake. The irrational expenditure on for-profit schools and universities with low graduation rates will revamp for the benefit of the entire nation.
Increased Specialization of work
The global economy has put much pressure on some economies such as the United Kingdom to embrace specialization in high-tech alongside higher value added commodities (services and products). For example, in the United Kingdom, the largest export industries are organic chemical, surgical and optical instruments, pharmaceuticals and nuclear technology. These shifts or economic situation are only sustainable with skilled graduates who are capable of contributing to these high-tech industrial productions. The higher education is, therefore, a principal contributor to the economic advancement and should be free all the high school alumni. The United States has a free K-12 public education but has failed to fund university education. This failure implies that the economy of America is incapable of competing with other developed countries with free higher education. The graduates will be allowed to be more productive with free university education alongside increased expenditure to stimulate the economic growth.
The Opportunity Cost is the premise against or criticism the free university for the students who complete high school. The greater investment in cost-free universities education would mean an opportunity cost of higher taxes and less spending in other sectors. It is reasonable to have some people benefit from the vocational training such plumbers and electricians to fill the gap in the economy. The country needs both core generic skills (literacy, communication skills, and numeracy) and graduates in equal measures. A country with the core generic skills shortages in such industries as health care, plumbing, and construction is a major threat to economic development. The problem is never a lack of art degrees but the rather lower level of vocational skills thereby a justification for charging for university but increased public expenditure to revert the lower level skills and experiences.
Conclusion
The university education should be free for all the students who have completed their high school. There are more advantages to the entire economy, individuals and society when the government subsidizes enormous fees of attaining a university degree. Many cases of small university graduation rates result from the high costs. The talented and bright student are therefore forced to drop out thereby failing to accomplish their career objectives and goals. The inequality in income levels make would mean that only parents with higher income will pay for their children making the university education a preserve for the rich and wealthy individuals. The labor market will have shortages of competent professionals. The health status will also deteriorate, and crime rates will hike since those with a degree have greater potential to minimize health risks and crime rates in a country.
