The deaths of Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino are remembered by many as something that happened yesterday, while others can only hear of what happened. The two were killed in the summer of 1992 by the Sicilian Mafia. The two prosecuting magistrates had, for a long time, been waging major wars on organized crime since the early eighties. Giovanni succumbed to a car bomb, as illustrated in the video, whereas his colleague Borsellino died a few weeks later in the same manner. The two were, therefore, assassinated by the Sicilian Mafia in an unprecedented manner and ways. By assassinating them, the Mafia, which controlled much of both the legal and illegal markets within the area, wanted to force the government to back out of their push against them. They used the assassinations as ways to break the tight grip that the Italian government had on its people. This paper discusses Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino deaths, the reasons why they were assassinated, and the impact of their death on the judicial system and the Italian government.
Both of them had been members of the Sicily’s Anti-mafia pool of magistrates who had been tasked with the role of investigating the Sicily’s Mafia and provide information on their activities across Italy. The pool was created as a means of protecting the investigators from being individually targeted by a group. The two magistrates had also worked on several cases before and within the same neighborhood. Some of their fond memories were of them playing ping pong and different games as well. At the time of their service, the Mafia had constantly worked under threats, attacks, and other members of the pool killed. So, in fear, most of them lived under police protection.
The two prosecutors were assassinated because of their anti-mafia stance and principles. The two at the time and described as national heroes that died amid the Mafia’s war on the state. The two tried to ensure that the Mafia’s grip on the state was reduced significantly and as a result of their assassination, the Italian government modernized their fight against the Mafia. The government also morphed and shifted their fight against Sicilian Mafia through the judicial system. They also deployed different administrative teams and structures to help legitimize their fight. Besides, the two magistrates played a significant role in fighting other Mafia groups such as the Calabrian Ndrangheta and Neapolitan Camorra. They were the pioneers of judicial proceedings against the Mafia groups. The assassination of the two magistrate prosecutors not only affected the way that the judicial policies were altered, but it also resulted in the specific fight against Mafia groups across the region. The policies were designed in a manner that ensured organized crime was significantly reduced.
In conclusion, Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino were members of the Sicily’s Anti-mafia pool of magistrates who had been tasked with the role of investigating the Sicily’s Mafia and provide information on their activities across Italy. The pool was created as a means of protecting the investigators from being individually targeted by a group. The two were assassinated by the Sicilian Mafia in an unprecedented manner and way. By assassinating them, the Mafia, which controlled much of both the legal and illegal markets within the area, wanted to force the government to back out of their push against them. As a result of their assassination, the Italian government modernized their fight against the Mafia. The government also morphed and shifted their fight against Sicilian Mafia through the judicial system.
