In the Manojlovich et al (2009), Model 1 in Table 3 represents a response to a research question. What, if any, relationship exists between patient outcomes, nurse perceptions communication between staff, and the situational environment? To represent patient outcomes, the researchers implemented the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation III (APACHE III). The scores were collected from a random sample of patients for 5 months. In all, 1090 patient chart data was collected. Based on this and communication and situational environmental data, combinations of variables representing perceptions of bureaucratic nuances and capacity were used to formulate the predictive potential of the study. What they found was a significant inverse association between VAP and patient acuity, as measured by APACHE III scores (r = -0.40, P = .05) suggesting that VAP may not be a good indicator of patient outcomes. In other words, the greater variance in nurse perceptions of physician the more likely the would be pneumonia on the unit. This is important, because it demonstrates that the quality of professional communication is correlative with outcomes of mission critical objectives in healthcare.
