Introduction
This discussion encompasses a comprehensive examination into four key features linking the Doctorate of Education program/practice with the nurse practitioner role. Specific of this discussion entails an examination of the eight essentials of Doctoral Education in the nurse practitioner role. It also forges an evaluation of the eight essentials of Doctoral Education in one of the remaining traditional advanced nursing practice roles. Further an assessment relating the importance of eight essentials of Doctoral Education in one of the emerging DNP role. In concluding an in-depth examination into the influence Doctoral Education health care today and into the future will be embraced.
Examination of the eight essentials of Doctoral Education in the nurse practitioner role.
The eight essentials of doctoral education relates to practice of nursing at the doctoral level. They embody Scientific Underpinnings for Practice; Organizational and Systems Leadership for Quality Improvement and Systems Thinking; Clinical Scholarship and Analytical Methods for Evidence-Based Practice; Information Systems/Technology and Patient Care Technology
for the Improvement and Transformation of Health Care; Health Care Policy for Advocacy in Health Care; Interprofessional Collaboration for Improving Patient (Zaccagnini & White, 2014).
With respect to aligning these essentials to the nurse practitioner roles it means selecting features that provide a more advanced practice role for the already advance nurse practitioner. It means evaluating aspects of the program that will demonstrate excellence in nursing practice and research. For example, nurse practitioners hold a masters degree, as the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (2006) explains, doctorial programs carry two main elements, which are its focus. They are research that offers a doctorate of Philosophy in nursing employing skillful systems thinking. The second offering is practice focused, preparing the advanced nurse practitioners to become specialists in different disease/clinical interests (Zaccagnini & White, 2014).
This extends the APRN’s role from functioning within an environment whereby executing competences is the goal for quality health care delivery accomplishment. With a doctoral education there is provision of evidence-based practice through research and specialization in demanding health care disciplines. These competencies have a direct role of practice. These roles cater to specific populations in their clinical intervention advanced practice registered nurses at the masters’ level. He/she must be capable of mastering these roles before entering a more intensive capacity of doctorial nursing practice (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2011).
Examination of the Eight Essentials of Doctoral Education in one of the remaining traditional advanced nursing practice role.
One of the traditional advanced registered practice nurse’s roles in related to accomplishing competences as well as serving distinct population that would be examined is the certified nurse midwife function. This category of advanced nurse performs duties of specializing in women and obstetric care intervention. Specifically, it involves conducting physical examinations pertaining to pregnancy. This encompasses abdominal palpation, pelvic assessment and vaginal evaluations. They also prescribe medications, educating mothers and their partners and participate in the intra natal care of mothers (Walker, Lannen & Rossie, 2014)
In relation to the eight essentials of Doctoral education this traditional advanced practice role is part of the practice focused education process whereby the practitioner develops specialists’ skills in areas of clinical interest. In my evaluation of these traditional roles executed by the certified nurse midwife, they are aligned to about three major essentials of the doctor education intervention. First, they relate to clinical prevention and population health for improving the nation’s health. Maternal and child health services have been among the poorly addressed health care delivery with recent years (Walker et.al, 2014)
It was not that mothers were reluctant to access such care, but lack of insurance coverage among many other barriers has caused maternal mortality rates to increase. This was due to inadequate access to health care. Consequently, this role forges an alignment with essential V, Health Care Policy for Advocacy in Health Care. The certified nurse midwife in the capacity of maternal interventionists in a twenty-first century healthcare environment in which doctoral education is available, can be useful as a specialist offering improved maternal care in the society. Thirdly, for him/her to be most effective in policy applicability, ‘inter-professional collaboration for improving patient and population health outcomes is important (Kleinpell, Scanlon, Hibbert, Ganz, East, Fraser, Wong & Beauchesne, 2014).
Examination of the Eight Essentials of Doctoral Education in one of the emerging DNP role.
Information technology has greatly revolutionized the roles of nurses, advanced practice nurses and more importantly, doctoral nurse practitioners (DNP). Articulation of information technology skills greatly distinguishes DNPs’ roles from the masters level trained advanced practice nurse. These abilities improve patient care quality through supportive clinical decision making devices. Application of information technology by the DNP provides astute leadership within the healthcare system and environments of academic learning. The Information Systems/Technology and Patient Care Technology for the Improvement and Transformation systems adequately addresses this new DNP responsibility (Chism, 2016).
Graduate DPNs are capable of selecting, designing and utilizing information technology in evaluating care programs, outcomes of in intervention and care systems. At a much higher level The DNP applies information technology towards providing budgets, web-based learning within their organizations and other supportive intervention strategies. Doctor education in the emerging practice role prepares the doctor advance practice nurse to lead the way in analyzing the critical features needed to use in evaluating health care information systems within their organizations. They communicate the value of information technology in improving quality of patient while upgrading skills of record storage in health care settings (Chism, 2016).
Conclusion
The Doctor education currently is a great application to health care delivery in United States of America. This country despite its enviable healthcare scientific advancement, the cost of health care is inaccessible to millions of Americans. Inaccesiblities have linked to poverty and the healthcare structure requiring citizen to be insured in gaining access services that are available. This is a crisis in the nation since a great portion of the population cannot afford the cost of health insurance even with provisions of the affordable act.
Currently there are 11million undocumented immigrants in the country for whom no provisions for health care have been made. As such, quality health care is unaffordable. Under these circumstances some clinics have been established across the country where Doctor advanced practice nurses filling this healthcare gap by affordable access to this disadvantaged population. Meanwhile many American citizens and legal residents still cannot afford quality health care since their insurances do not cover certain services. Consequently, in the future doctor advanced nurses may be the main stream remedy in offering affordable health care services to this population.
