Introduction

From a nursing perspective, it is important to identify the resources that are required from a web-based portal in order to determine if it is useful for application in the current practice setting. This process requires an evaluation of websites and databases that possess extensive numbers of records; therefore, specific criteria must be established that support nursing practice objectives at the desired level (Hebda & Czar, 2013). There are considerable efforts required by nurses to identify information via websites that is effective and appropriate to meet clinical practice needs (Hebda & Czar, 2013).

Body

Nurses are required to learn how to utilize databases wisely and to be effective in conducting research as part of their practice strategy (Hebda & Czar, 2013). Furthermore, they must be able to effectively navigate through consumer websites as well as research databases in order to inform their patients of information that might be effective in meeting their specific needs or concerns. For example, the study of Parkinsons Disease may be consumer or research-based, thereby requiring different types of websites to address these concerns effectively. PubMed and MedlinePlus are sponsored by the same organization yet suit very different purposes, thereby creating a search process that meet very different needs for very different target populations (MedlinePlus, 2014; PubMed, 2014). As a result, it is important to identify these differences to determine the type of information that is most desirable.

Conclusion

Website utilization within the healthcare sector requires an evaluation of different types of target populations and the creation of an environment in which data and information is viewed by many different types of people in order to suite a specific purpose. This practice encourages nurses to sharpen their research skills and to also work with patients to determine how they might utilize different types of information that is derived.
