Term Paper

The Bible teaches us a number of principles that surround the big questions in life.  As this analysis will approach the questions of why we are here, what is wrong with society, and how we should care about our environment, it is clear that as children of God we are involved in His will in all of these major questions in which we encounter.  While it is not necessarily as clear as it seems in the problems of our lives, we can strive to live out our lives in His will as it is told to us in the Bible.

Why Are We Here?

Certainly one of the ultimate questions in life is in regards to why we are here.  Throughout theology and practical life, there are many topics that seem to infiltrate what is only at first an easy question to answer.  Truly when this question is compared to that of society’s problems, it can seem to be a little too much to comprehend at times.  However, we cannot deny what the Bible says about our presence on earth.

Enjoyment

In Genesis we learn that God created earth for our enjoyment.  He created a multitude of animals, plants, and abundant food for us to enjoy.  In Genesis 2 God creates man and gives him a partner, woman.  This enables humans to find companionship with each other in the presence of God as well.

In making man I believe there is something to be said for the enjoyment of God.  As we are made in His image, God delights in our presence.  Surely throughout the Old and New Testament there are plenty of examples of God finding enjoyment in human beings.  God is delighted in our presence, as we live in His will and in His love.

The Bible also makes the contrary quite clear in the Bible.  In the Old Testament we see the wrath and anger of God develop when we reject Him.  The Tower of Babel, Original Sin, and many stories exemplify this.  This presents a transition from the previous point.

Here we may find one answer to the question of why we are here.  I think a large part of it has to do with the enjoyment of God.  In His image, as we live with Him and by His commandments, He finds enjoyment in our presence.  For instance, in 1 Peter 3:4, it says that the inner spirit of beauty and gentleness is “precious in God’s sight” (NRSV).  Truly He delights in our presence as we hold fast to His presence and goodness in our lives.

From our perspective, we are here to delight in the presence of God.  This is something that is taught again throughout the Bible.  We are told that if we live in His spirit and presence, then we will find joy in Him.

Finding joy in God is perhaps one of the most fundamental dynamics in our lives.  It could arguably be the most important consideration in our lives.  Throughout the Bible and in our lives we learn that there is nothing greater than God.  God is our only true good that we have in our lives, as man is imperfect (not that man isn’t good, but that we should not put our complete trust in man, as the Bible states).  Thus in every aspect of our lives we are to act in accordance to His presence and will.  From this we will find true enjoyment.

Love

Another important topic in this conversation is that of love.  The love of God is bestowed upon us in His presence, which is something that of course has immense meaning.  In fact, love is given as the reason in which Jesus was sent to us, in order to save us from our sins.

We may look at love against the backdrop of the Great Commandment.  There are several places which express the meaning of the Great Commandment, and that express the power of love.  For instance, in Romans 13:8 we learn that love is the fulfillment of the law, and that that is all we owe to another.

The Great Commandment commands us to love God, and to love the neighbor as oneself.  In the Gospels Jesus proclaims this as the greatest commandment, and the commandment that will bring eternal life.  Truly loving God and loving others is one of the roots, and arguably relevant in other conversations, in why we are here.

Connecting it to previous points, we find joy in loving God.  In worshipping, praising, and living in His will, we find true enjoyment.  Thus as we build and grow in His love, and learn to love Him more, we learn that we are here to love Him above all else, even ourselves.

Loving others is relevant to the question of why we are here as well.  God gives us companionship in other human beings for our own good.  In loving other human beings, in relationships, we are also drawn to the love of God.  We not only find companionship and enjoyment in these relationships, but also in our love of God as well.

In a loving relationship, the presence of God is certainly given.  As we cling to the will of God and express our love for each other in His presence and love, we are not only living our lives in enjoyment of other human beings, but in His perfect and boundless love.  Thus there is no separate dimension to being in a world where we are with others, as in other relationship we are able to live out our faith and love for God in every aspect of our lives.

Other Dimensions

Although there may seem to be a few major answers to the question, it is not all that simple.  There are plenty of issues which seem to confuse the minds of many Christians from time to time, and issues that dissuade some from coming to God, unfortunately.  In the question of pain, suffering, and sin, these dynamics are certainly relevant.  However, we must learn to hold fast to God in every aspect of our lives.

Although we are certainly here to love God and others, this can become confused in difficult times.  Many people are unfortunately unable to continue with their faith in situations like these.  Others see atrocities and either reject or ignore the presence of God, which is also disturbing.

However, in the face of adversity, we must not allow these points to come in the way of loving God.  We are tested at times with issues, yet we must be able to cling to Him in the most difficult of times.  In situations like these, I truly believe that being able to trust God no matter what is important in one’s life.  Although it is difficult, I believe this will increase one’s relationship and faith, as God promises to never forsake us.

In connecting these points, there does not seem to be one simple answer.  Perhaps there is something more to this picture, as only God is all-knowing.  At any rate, I believe that there is enjoyment from the perspective of God, based on Biblical evidence.  Also, we are made in His image to love Him and His creation.

Enjoyment in the love of God seems to be one of the most important dynamics in this conversation.  Certainly as we live our lives in His will, we will join Him eternally in His presence.  This is something that is reiterated throughout the Bible, in finding eternal life in Him.  I believe that this is the ultimate “end,” so to speak, in our lives.  However, we cannot dismiss the power, beauty, and enjoyment we receive when we live our lives for Him in His presence.  Truly, by living in the love of God, we are able to be in His presence, which is best for us in all aspects of our lives.  Certainly living our lives in His great love and will in this and the next life will give us happiness beyond measure.  We can verily spend our lives experiencing the joy from His love and presence.

What is Wrong With Society?

Society has many problems, as it can be seen throughout history and at present.  For many, including myself, it is all too overwhelming at times to think of society’s many problems that have manifested in the world.  Surely there are no simple solutions, yet we can all do what we can to help God’s children.

Identifying the Problem

The brokenness of the world begins with the brokenness of humans.  Although this paper will not get into its complexities, we realize from Original Sin that we are sinful human beings.  And although we have been redeemed in the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we are certainly not perfect human beings.

Our sinful nature has been seen throughout history.  From the earliest point in that of Original Sin, to the ongoing atrocities around the world, there is no shortage of evidence.  Even in history there have been such atrocities that it has raised questions to the suffering of God, as seen in the extermination of Jews in Nazi Germany during World War II.  Unfortunate sins by humanity have perpetuated a number of struggles, hardships, and horrific events.

No matter the level there are sinful bases that create such problems.  Families are broken from a number of sinful behaviors, such as drug abuse or sexual sin.  Communities are overridden with criminal behavior and undermining values that sin against the commandments of God.  Across the world people are still not free, from volatile governments to people that are hunted and killed in their own country.  Truly, there are no shortages of examples for the sinful nature of human beings, since the beginnings of Adam and Eve to those that occur in our own communities and across the world.

The sinful nature of human beings pinpoints the true problem of individuals in society.  Of course, there are too many types of sinful natures and thoughts that account for such behavior and problems to state.  At any rate it is clear that people act out on these sins to account for the disparities in society today.

Rejection of God

The rejection of God is also relevant to this discussion.  Individuals who sin are rejecting the presence of God to some extent.  Of course, we are not all perfect, yet there is a point that we can identify problems and harbor negative thoughts and behaviors.  However, in the problems of society, it is clear that no such actions are taken along these lines.

Many of the problems within society result from the rejection of God.  Arguably, they all do.  Moving on, though, individuals who act upon their own sinful nature, thoughts, and desires do not follow God in such efforts.  As a result of their lack of care and adherence to the presence and will of God, they sin.

Rejecting God is a growing problem in the world today.  Surveys demonstrate the negative trend in the belief in God, unfortunately.  Thus it seems that some of these problems may continue to occur.  Truly it is difficult to avoid problems if individuals do not know God and have Him in their lives.

Steps to Take to Help the World

Obviously action needs to be taken to help with the many problems in the world.  While some may ignore acting upon such problems, it is important to do so for everyone’s sake.  Although we may not be able to cure everything, we must take steps to help those in the world, in our lives in which God have us.

Prayer

Prayer should be at the forefront of every Christian’s life.  There is no shortage of bases in which the Bible gives for prayer.  Prayer can be used to ask for God’s help in whatever may be occurring, and to whomever.

As individuals we must pray for the problems in the world.  Regardless of whether they are occurring in our own families and society, or across the world, it is important to take time with God to ask for His blessings in the difficulties of the world.  Not only will it help those in need but also one may find reward in His sight (Matthew 6:6).

Prayer is something that we can all do for the good of the world and others.  It doesn’t require money or much time to ask God for help with any type of problem.  It is also extremely important for one to pray with God, in order to build his or her relationship with Him.  Again, we can never underestimate the power of prayer for our sake and those across the world, in talking to Him.  There is nothing negative to one who takes his thoughts and wishes to God in a genuine fashion.

Church

Going to church is a major topic in Christianity.  As Christians we are called into fellowship with other Christians for our own good.  Additionally, we may become involved in our church in the problems of the world, which is also very important.

Relevant to the current discussion, we may go to church in order to make a difference in the world.  Churches across the world have been active in various issues.  In representing the body of Christ on earth, we must become involve in our church in order to make a difference in some of these problems.

Churches are often active within our communities.  By trying to play an active role in these types of plans, we put ourselves into a position of being able to help out those in need within our own communities.  For instance, by donating clothing and food to local organizations, and donating our time, we can join with others in our church to make a difference.  As fellow Christians we must try to become active and participate in such events to help out within the community.

Church also gives way to other types of opportunities.  Some smaller ways to help out in a church setting can make a large difference.  For instance, one could easily devote time to the church, such as helping with tasks within the church, teaching children Sunday school, or playing an instrument in worship.  By becoming active in a church setting, we are able to reach out to those within the church.  Also, those who are visiting church and who may not know God may take an interest to our efforts.

For those who have the time and money, when relevant, missions within church is also a great opportunity.  Many churches are active in helping out those across the world.  Missions trips that are offered represent a great way to become active in helping out others, and are a great experiences to the environment of others across the world.

Opportunities in One’s Time and Money

There are countless opportunities that are presented when we approach the topic of helping out others in the world.  From church to other means of volunteering and dedicating time, one can devote his or her time to such efforts.  There are also ways to donate money to assist efforts around the world.  These considerations are important to be able to make a difference in the world.

Opportunities around the community and world can be benefited from our time.  There are plenty of organizations that would be grateful for volunteers to become associated.  In addition to churches, many non-profit organizations are trying to make a difference in the world.  Perhaps we can all become more involved in such efforts.

Financially we can also help those in need.  We may choose to directly give money to such organizations.  Alternatively, we can give our money in church, as the Bible states.  As 2 Corinthians 9:7 states, “God loves a cheerful giver.”  In this we can give back to those in need from what God has bestowed.

Leading Others to God

In many efforts our focus must be to lead others to the love of God.  Surely many problems in the world exist that need tangible efforts, such as hunger in many areas.  However, in the sinful nature of individuals across the world in which some problems occur, we must be devoted to spreading the word of God.

However it does not take immeasurable efforts to do this.  While some are called to minister to those across the world, others can be involved in these types of efforts.  Church is a great start for many, where we can build relationships in our own communities with others in order to help others build in Christ.  Sometimes those in need are the people who are directly around us; we do not always need to look across the globe to find major problems.

For many we must observe how we may impact others’ spiritual lives.  It does not mean that we have to give up all of our time and money.  It does not mean that we have to give up our “normal lives.”  However, we can all make small changes to impact the way others interact with Christ, in order to find His presence in their lives.

Finding these ways is extremely important.  For instance, even if one’s career is not directly related to Christ, that does not mean that you cannot build relationships and offer a friend to go to church with you.  Those without many financial resources can have a dramatic impact in the way in which their family and friends may come to Christ if they do not have a relationship with Him.

Why Should We Care About Our Environment?

The environment is also a topic of much discussion for many.  It is often seen in political circles and among those who are trying to protect its integrity and presence.  However, we as children of God cannot ignore the well-being of the environment.

The world is a part of God’s creation.  Although it may not be a rational entity in His image, as we are, it does not mean that it is negligible.  Our environment, bestowed upon us by God, is a meaningful aspect of our lives.  He gave it to us so that we may live in His presence, and we should do what we can to preserve its presence.

Aesthetically we must preserve our environment.  God’s creation, including the environment, is one manner in which we see the majesty and beauty of God’s work.  If our environment were to continue to deteriorate, we would not be able to enjoy its presence fully.  Thus, we must act to preserve the integrity and beauty of the environment, which is a reminder of the beauty, power, and will of God.

For future generations the environment must be preserved.  We cannot allow future generations to live in an unhealthy environment.  It must be preserved in order for all to live healthy and long lives, without having to worry about the safety of environments around the world.

We should all recognize the call to our environment.  To preserve the integrity of God’s majestic creation, and to keep it safe for all to live their lives, we must act upon the well-being of the environment.  This is another area in which all can become involved in, no matter the age or financial resources thereof.

There are many simple methods of preserving our environment.  Around the house we can all dispose of our trash properly, which also extends to public places in which litter is found at times.  We can also be careful not to waste our household resources.  We should conserve, light, water, and other resources as not to be wasteful.

Other methods can be effective as well.  For instance, recycling is an important dynamic to preserving our environment.  This is something that children can become involved in rather easily.  By teaching the generation about concepts such as these, perhaps it will go far to preserve our environment.

Globally there are ways in which we can help our environment.  One major development is the presence of solar, electric, and other methods to drive cars.  Perhaps by supporting such efforts, or in due time when it is more affordable to do so, we could help establish a healthier environment.  We can also support lawmakers in their attempts to make a healthier environment.  Such efforts should be followed closely so that we are aware of such developments for the well-being of the environment.

In any respect it is clear that the environment is a vital part of our lives.  As children of God we must identify the environment as an important creation from Him.  We must also preserve the environment so that future generations may enjoy it purely.  There are many ways in which we can help preserve the environment in our communities and around the world.

Conclusion

As children of God we face a number of struggles in this world.  Even in something such as the environment, there are dire consequences if we fail to act for the well-being of God’s creation.  In approaching the problems of society as present in the world, we must cling to God and try to make a difference, with His help.

The problems of this world are grounded in sin.  Sin is in turn grounded in the rejection of God, at least in some form.  We must respond from a number of ways available to us, by using our time and resources to simply staying in prayer.  At the root of this issue is being able to help others come to Christ, who is the only one that can truly save others from such sins.

In these attempts we come to understand why we are here.  As we admire God’s great creation, both in this world and in the beauty of His love, we even see His greatness in the difficult times.  Truly as we devote what we have to bringing others to God, whether or not we are successful, our faith and love in God grows.

In our lives we find true enjoyment only in Him.  In this we believe that God finds enjoyment in our actions that follow His will and love for us.  In the power of His love, we find the greatness of God to which we hold fast.  It is in His great love that we able to abide in every aspect of our lives.
