How can the nurse, caring for this family, assist with the changes they are about to undergo?

First the nurse can inquire how comfortable Suzie is with the decision to identify whether she discussed it with her husband. This is to determine the level of mutual understandings within the decision making process. Since this would affect not only Suzie, but also her husband and three children a family meeting should be scheduled with the family nurse to discuss the issue openly.

Alternatives could be offered which include offering a list of agencies that provide daily home health aide assistance services for the elderly such as baths, shopping and house maintenance for a few hours during the day. This would take the pressure off of Suzie taking full care of her mother daily. Also, she could have someone coming in besides the home health aide to stay with her when they have tom be out at work and school.

How can both the family structural theory and the family developmental theory is applied to this scenario?

Family structural and developmental theories could be applied to this scenario in explaining alterations in the family structure and emergence of additional roles. As the family structure exists now without Mr. Jones it is a nuclear structure. With the addition of a grandmother it has evolved into an extended family form. In reference to development theory changes take place in structure as well as responsibilities since each family member has a social obligation to the other. Inevitably, every family member will develop emotional connection to Mrs. Jones (Greig et.al, 2007).

 How can health education enhance health promotion for this family?

Health education promotion strategies are aimed at maintaining cohesiveness within the family as well as taking care of Mrs. Jones’ health needs. Obviously, Mrs. Jones’ health needs may now become a priority for the family. It would mean that the time spent together as a nuclear union may be reduced due to this inclusion. Therefore, education would assist in helping in scheduling time together without Mrs. Jones, especially intimate space for husband and wife. Emotional support intervention would be helpful as health promotion technique in reliving the stress balancing caring for a loved one, work, school and social life (Edelman & Mandle, 2010).
