A best practice is a method or technique that always demonstrates results superior to those achieved by other means, and that is used as a standard. Project methodology is defined as the set or system of methods, principles, and rules for conducting and regulating the project. Often, project methodology entails using the best practice or to test a practice that may replace the former best practice. A project management process is the management process of planning and controlling the performance or execution of a project. The project process has several steps which involves processing input to output. The process itself entails project initiation, project planning, project execution, project control and validation, and project closeout. Project tools or techniques are the tools, knowledge and techniques required for managing projects. An understanding of all of these components is necessary for successful completion of a project.
Roy Munden was appointed chairman of the bank in order to resolve the problem of providing accommodation for the bank in the future. As a consequence, Munden was responsible for assessing the options for managing the project and making a recommendation to the board of the bank. Munden was faced with broad requirements from his supervisors with the goal of planning the construction of a building that would be high in architectural quality and be five years in advance of any building built at the time and provide twenty-first century technological capabilities to remain ahead of the competition. To do so, the project methodology employed aimed to determine the feasibility of space calculations and to define the needs for a temporary headquarters. The next section of the methodology entailed searching for an appropriate architect and issuing the Request for Proposals (RFP). The final steps of the project methodology involved presenting the architect options to the board and awarding the contract.
The project management prospective of this project entails determining an adequate architect. The architect will be responsible for all details concerning the building’s construction, but it is the project manager’s responsibility to determine which architect is the most capable, has a complete understanding of the bank’s request, and will work for an affordable rate. Furthermore, project management includes the project manager’s ability to make a decision that will be supported by the bank’s board. After this phase of the project is completed, Munden will be expected to take over as the construction coordinator, where he will be responsible for transmitting the bank’s instructions to the architect, running the subcontracts, and overseeing construction. Therefore, there is a need for him to establish a building program as well.
The project process involved in selecting an architect includes defining the problem, which involves space calculations for the project site, determining whether phased redevelopment and new construction of the Statue Square site is feasible, issuing RFPs, selecting the best architect for the job by visiting their offices and reading through their applications, presentation of results to the board, and contract award and project design. The main project tools that are used in this instance is knowledge of the banks needs and what the architects will be able to provide to benefit the company.
At the board meeting, Munden should present the feasibility findings, reasons for the architect selection, summarize the consultant contracts, and briefly discuss the ideas that have been considered for the construction of the building. It is essential for Munden to recommend to the board that additional money be invested in the design of the building. While the selected architectural team seems ready and willing to create a revolutionary and modern building, it would be impossible to do so without the proper materials. Therefore, it would be useful to hire additional consultants to determine which building design is the most innovative and to invest additional funds in the building’s construction.
Although Munden’s plan will likely be effective, it may have been more beneficial for him to select project consultants at the beginning of the project. Once these project consultants are able to successfully define what is needed in order to accomplish the project in addition to development of innovative ideas for the construction of the building, only then should Munden attempt to search for an architect. In this way, the needs of the project will already be defined and the process involved in searching for an appropriate architectural team will be based on determining whether they are able to accomplish these specific requirements. While the architectural team will be allowed to interpret the design plan in a manner of their choosing, they will be guided to a greater extent, which will ensure the wants of the bank are met precisely.
