Introduction

The information system I selected is clinical decision support system (CDSS). It has been further described as an interactive computer software decision support system (DSS), which is expected to align health care observations with knowledge in assisting physicians and profession to make appropriate decisions that will improve patient care. Its overall, purpose embodies functioning as an active knowledge system that utilizes at least two patient items data in determining the quality/level and quantity of care needed (Berner, 2007).

Precisely, the main purpose for implementingmodern clinical decision support system(CDSS)in health care organizations across the country is to facilitation clinicians’ point of care execution.Simply, the clinical information system allows a clinician to interact with it to facilitate diagnosis determination, analyze patient reports and other important data.Theoretically, it has been posited that clinical support systems (CDSS) were actually designed to make decisions for the clinicians, but this is not the true purpose of the device. Clinicians’ input is by way of providing relevant data (Gardner, 2004).

Data placed into the database activates a particular result. The system would then wait for a response form the clinician after options are offered based on data filtered through the mechanism. Importantly, the advent of this new methodology whereby a computerized mechanism supplements clinicians’ skills in decision making process has tremendously improved patient outcomes in medical science by utilizing both clinicians’ knowledge and computerized decision support systems(Rothman & Vigoda, 2012).

Body

The most important data requirements associated with the system are related to the specific model used by the organization. There are two types of clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) popular within health care. They are knowledge based and non- knowledge based. Knowledge based systems require that data entry adhere to system rules and associations related to compiled data indicative of IF-THEN regulations. In cases where drug determination is part of the program then rules that apply are written as ‘IF drug X is taken AND drug Y is taken THEN alert user’ (Gardner, 2004, p. 10).

Non-knowledge database software clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) applications utilize an artificial intelligence mechanism known as the machine learning. This device allows computefind clinical data patterns from past experiences.Genetic algorithms and artificial neural networks are the types of non-knowledge-based systems that exist. Artificial networks require nodes and weighed connection for patterning data to establish a relationship between symptoms and diagnosis.Genetic algorithms demand that simplified evolutionary processes be applied for efficient data processing (Rothman & Vigoda, 2012).

Various categories of healthcare professionals use the system and are involved at many levels. Physicians particularly rely on it to provide guidance towards correct diagnoses.Nurses too depend on the system to guide decisions regarding appropriate interventions and laboratory technicians collaboratively enter for decision making assistance. Consequently, there is immense integration with other healthcare applications. The electronic health record (EHR) system for example, is a valuable integration(Rothman & Vigoda, 2012).

Conclusion

However, standardization of data is required for interoperability. Standards between electronic health records (EHR) and clinical decision support systems (CDSS)overlap since HIPPA legislation specify database language; software selection and security features. It was discovered, through that in the United States of America no standards of semantic interoperability in health care data exist only syntactic standards are operable (Gardner, 2004)

As such, while data might be assembled in a standard format utilizing a pipe notation oHL7, or the bracket notation XML; there is neither definition nor linkage to a dictionary that can be shared consistently. More importantly, when this occurs adding complex layers of information models HL7 v3 RIM do not resolve the issue (Gardner, 2004).
