In response to topic, #1 of this week’s discussion, the academic climate has changed in recent years. No longer does the old adage, publish or perish, apply to teachers. There is now a higher expectation for students to publish a variety of sources, including theses, researchers, and other articles. According to All Nurses, “It takes much time, effort, and perseverance – often the tipping point for busy educators whose schedules are already stretched to the limit.” (VickyRN, 2011) In order to increase the chances of getting an article published, one of the first steps in getting started is to begin a strategy. This outlines, why to write, what to write, and whom to write for.  There is clearly knowledge that nurses acquire while working in the medical field, this knowledge could potentially benefit others on a worldwide basis. (Webb, 2009) When knowing what is going to be written, and who the intended target is. The next step is knowing where to publish. There are several journals that have different types of reputations, audiences, and a leading establishment to win research grants and promotion. (Webb, 2009) According to American Nurse Today, their publication is a peer-reviewed journal sent out to over 175,000 nurses in differed settings and specialty areas. It is also a part of the Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL) Database. (American Nurse Today, 2013) The step is the type of article which can range from editorial, empirical, review, clinical, or etc. The type of article will help in further planning, for writing for the type of audience, the style, and structure. Within any publication, the grammar is the context. The way the article is formatted will help in getting published. The main idea of any publication should be clearly stated, and the article should be easily accessible online. According to Webb, the title must be clear and informative, and articles should ensure that there in impact factor is critical in reaching the targeted audience. All these steps help to plan out a feasible strategy in getting writings published.
