The Merck memo is a difficult read because it does not address the real issue at hand, imminent layoffs. Many people appreciate a direct discussion of the issue rather than to skirt around the topic with filler words and phrases, which occurred frequently in this memo. Mr. Timney’s business communication skills are sorely lacking, as is his sincerity. Also, his tone in the memo does not convey the importance of the layoffs and how it will impact his employees. Mr. Timney has not used a practical approach, which is typically recommended in this and many other types of business communication (Thill and Bovee, 2012).
With this memo, the attention to the problem is sorely lacking and limits its genuineness and authenticity (Hofstrand, 2009). Furthermore, it does not convey the urgency of the situation and how it will truly impact employees (Robinson et.al, 2014). Communication in a written format must demonstrate a truthful and realistic approach to the situation at hand, and this is not evident in the memo (Mind Tools, 2014). When informing employees of bad news that could cost them their careers, authenticity and truthfulness will go a long way in enabling these employees to understand why they are on the list to go (Walters, 2014). It is also important to consider how the memo will come across to other employees, particularly when dancing around the larger issue at hand, as this will have an even greater negative impact on the entire situation than that which already exists (Walters, 2014).
This example is one of many where employees are not given a truthful outlook regarding a business and any potential changes on the horizon. This is a frustrating experience for employees because honesty and integrity will provide a more realistic approach to a given situation. Attempting to soften the blow by beating around the bush is not an effective means of addressing a potentially negative situation. Greater respect will be achieved if the problem is managed in a truthful and honest manner.
