The National Electronic Disease Surveillance System, Coursework Example

Coursework

The National Electronic Disease Surveillance System (NEDSS) has been compiled and put into existence in order to provide a secure framework to allow health professionals such as doctors and nurses to better communicate about disease patterns and how to handle outbreaks. “Software, hardware and data bases are used to make this implementation” (National Electronic Disease Surveillance System, 2010). The Center of Disease Control (CDC) is in charge of maintaining NEDSS as the center control system. Hospitals, clinics and agencies must adopt protocol for viability, accuracy and speed of disease viability to the highest standard. Since the implementation of the NEDSS hundreds of trails of paperwork and database reporting have been eliminated making one central system which is more viable to implement, control and track.

The most difficult task with the implementation of NEDSS is gathering all the files and putting them in one central system. Through the old way of doing things hundreds of files have been either lost, damaged or corrupted. There were just too many avenues to travel to find out information and to transfer and keep total monitoring capability of each disease.. In Florida the CDC had troubles maintaining and tracking shared priority health issues. Their goal was to “increase agency effectiveness and efficiency”. (State, Local, Tribal and Territorial Public Health Professionals Gateway, 2010).

A second barrier to implementation of NEDSS was the idea that Florida only was allotted a little over one million dollars to make the transition. It is apparent performance management data within the CDC was not at its opportune high stance. There needed to be more order and organization to make the transition to NEDSS.

A third unregimented hurdle that with prudent purpose and aim stood in the way of the implementation in the State of Florida was that the proposed quota of 70% of health departments producing a minimum of two to three aiding documents to NEDSS did to no avail. Why was the CDC having such problems aiding the transition to the NEDSS? There were lack of finding, employees and chaotic record keeping in the hundreds of various systems. There was to the best of my knowledge no centralized government or control over the diseases and how to relay information about such diseases.

A better way to make sure the implementation went smoothly would be to hire more personnel to make the transfer transition in bits and pieces with organization and facilitation of each file at top priority. There must be order to prevent loss and chaos.

The NEDSS was created to provide a centralized means of determination of disease control and specifications and to keep the information under one large data base through a series of organized and well maintained files. It takes energy, ambition, coordination, intelligence and focus to make a large transition as such successful. Florida failed in its ability to keep order in the previous system that worked to no avail. I vehemently believe in the centralized data base system for storage and transfer abilities. It might take some time to make this happen and find loss or misused files, but there usually is a paper trail that can be found and utilized to fill in the gaps. Florida is willing to try their tactically best workers and going through each and every “nanny and crook” until the new centralized system is in perfect working order Once this is achieved the CDC can relax and enjoy the ride for the rest of the way.
