Introduction

The website Healthcare Informatics (2014) offers information regarding current areas of interest for healthcare professionals, such as the Ebola virus, hospital readmissions, and medical reforms. The phrase “provider order” is not mentioned on the homepage. The OHSU Clinfowiki (2014) website, however, does offer information regarding provider order entry and its impact on healthcare operations and related activities. Additional insight regarding this topic must be addressed as a means of exploring new ideas to improve this practice and how it impacts patient care and treatment.

Analysis

There has been an increased dependence on provider order entry as an innovative approach to modernizing healthcare and promoting efficiency; however, with this practice is a reliance on technology to provide specific advantages to the system, thereby supporting the diffusion of innovation theory (Campbell et.al, 2007). When there is a reliance to the extent that no other options are available and there is a system failure, this creates significant challenges for individuals and organizations who rely on these systems at an almost crippling level if a malfunction is identified (Campbell et.al, 2007). From a social perspective, innovation in this context is a critical aspect of the social elements of a healthcare organization and creates new challenges under which operations are conducted (Ash et.al, 2007).

Conclusion

Healthcare informatics offers many positive benefits to organizations; however, reliance upon innovation may create difficult challenges when there is no other feasible alternatives in place, thereby creating a breakdown of the process when the innovation has reached a difficult stage and is no longer functioning properly. These efforts require an examination of other factors that impact patient care and wellbeing over the long term.
