The new Mayor Bill de Blasio has made an astounding decision at a local meeting in New York. This decision clearly presented Mayor Bill de Blasio’s intentions towards generating more tourism. De Blasio hired Fred Dixon, CEO of NYC as the new tourism leader (Colvin 1). In addition, the mayor has hired the prolific and successful Marty Markowitz, Vice President of Promotion, and Engagement. Marty has a proven background bring a wealth of public sector expertise to improve the tourism attractions in NYC. In a statement by Mayor Bill de Blasio ”Marty is a tireless champion for Brooklyn and all of New York City, bringing a wealth of public sector experience to NYC & Company”(Campbell 1).

The appointment of Fred Dixon speaks volumes about de Blasio’s future commitment to the financial and political support of the tourism industry in NYC. In an effort to bring in more tourism in NYC requires an experienced tourism CEO that has knowledge to increase the number of visitors. Fred Dixon would be a good choice because he has a reputation for breaking records each year for increased number of tourist visiting. He was the interim CEO replacing George Ferrita last year without missing a beat and contributed to a solid tourism plan for years to come. One the descriptions used to describe Fred Dixon was his unbridled contagious enthusiasm when talking about NYC as a tourist destinations. The mayor de Blasio was in agreement about a speech given by Fred Dixon concerning why tourists should come to NYC. In addition, he was so excited about the presentation by Fred Dixon, he was ready to catch a plan to visit the NYC attractions. (Colvin 1).

Bill de Blasio has proposed banning horse carriage rides in NYC. The mayor has made it public that horse carriages are inhumane to horses and should be banned. This would be one the worst mistakes in the history of Mayors in NYC.  The horse carriage ride in NYC is a big part of the tourist draw and allure. There are people that dream of coming to Central Park riding the horse carriages. The NYC city tourist spend millions of dollars each year while anticipating the excitement of the world renowned Central Park ride. The horse carriage ride is a rich tradition which contributes to cities tourism revenues and the increase tourist traffic. In NYC, many families that have depended on the revenues from the horse carriage for generations while contributing to NYC viable street businesses.

The horse carriage business contributes to the influx of tourist from all over the world. The carriage business is not some small business enterprise that makes a small salary. The horse carriage owners make more than the NYC cabbies. “Carriage drivers, because of their higher skill level, easily make twice as much as cabbies. Replacing a lifetime’s worth of income derived from 68 medallions could easily cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars” (Gelinas 2). The horse carriage tradition is part of the NYC tradition that contributes to the cities revenues, employment, and yearly tourism.

In conclusion, it is very clear that Mayor Bill de Blasio will support the financial commitment to the tourism budget. The hiring of two very well-known tourism professional indicates the mayor will engaged in financial and political support for the NYC tourism industry.
