The Doctor of Nursing Practice supports the analysis and understanding of evidence-based practice in order to accomplish the intended objectives by advancing nursing leadership and scholarship in new ways (Duke University School of Nursing, 2014). In this capacity, nurses acquire leadership skills and aim to promote practice change in order to keep up with the demands of the profession (Duke University School of Nursing, 2014). In addition, nurses in these roles are able to identify areas where they are able to serve communities well by learning many non-technical aspects of nursing that are necessary to support the overall nursing climate (Duke University School of Nursing, 2014.

With the PhD degree, nurses are prepared to work in fields such as academia and healthcare with research-based knowledge of the field and its objectives, along with a greater emphasis on research as the primary goal of the program (Vanderbilt University School of Nursing, 2014). This type of degree enables students to often work in clinical roles but to also be recognized for their contributions to the practice environment through the activities that they conduct via research protocols to address issues for which outcomes may improve the practice environment and impact patients over the long term (Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, 2014).
