10 Hours of Walking in NYC, Essay Example

Essay

The study design displayed in this video could be described as a participant observation model. The subjects are engaged in the process while observing the reaction of a woman walking ten hours in New York City. As such, the primary research question could be identified as how is a woman treated when waling though the streets in Manhattan, New York city all alone? Conclusions relate to once the gender is woman no matter whether she is sexually attractive or not harassment will occur. Also, whether she responds positively not it will continue for some time, while walking down the streets.

In my opinion it appears that data presented in the clip support the study conclusion. Clearly the study conclusion is that women are harassed in the streets of New York. Even though it was one woman being cited as evidence, the harassment did occur and it pertained towards the gender, especially her sexuality. Obvious threats to internal validity lay in the sample being very small. Perhaps,if it were a crowd of women or a series of women coming after the one highlighted, there would have been more valid supporting evidence.

External validity relates to how precisely the concept harassment was measured in the film. Obviously, the only harassment displayed was verbal. No touching was observed. Verbal harassment is not the only type women experience in New York or any other street.Implications that can be drawn from this relate to the safety of women on the streets of New York, especially Manhattan

Consequently, if it were possible for me to design my own research project participant observation would be a very good design to choose. After watching this clip the viewing audience would want to find out what happened to the two subjects in the research, the harasser and victim. The outcome was not clear.
