Learning & Knowledge and how it affected American culture.
This essay outlines information pertaining to two key elements in American culture, which have influenced learning and knowledge. They are community learning and Knowledge and professional learning and Knowledge. Tony Jeffs (2005) in his text Informal Education: Conversation, Democracy and Learning said that Community learning is also classified as community education in some cultures. Essentially, in the American context community learning relates to developmental programs organizations design in their quest to enhance performance of members (Jeffs, 2005). For example, in industrial organizations employers often undertake training employees to function in the specific field required to ensure efficiency on the job. This is apart from the entry level learning, which was obtained outside of the organization. These may include high school diploma or GED, basic professional learning such as Registered Nurse/ Police Officer that produce additional organizational learning features.
Matthew Eddy (2013 in his journal article ‘The Shape of Knowledge: Children and Visual Culture of Literacy and Numeracy’ described knowledge as the awareness of an occurrence or someone/something in the environment. He related scholars’ perspectives to further say knowledge awareness or understanding relates to facts concerning the situation or person/thing. In obtaining knowledge the one receiving it about another person/ situation or thing must develop the ability to accurately describe events pertaining to the phenomenon for which knowledge is received (Eddy, 2013). Further, knowledge can also be defined from a theoretical perspective meaning practical interpretation of an issue. In this case the knowledge obtained is derived from more than a philosophical or cultural paradigm. The expert Matthew Eddy (2005) wring in his article The Shape of Knowledge: Children and Visual Culture of Literacy and Numeracy explored scientific principles in investigating facts pertaining to the knowledge perceived. These scientific applications are referred to as scientific methods employed in research practices (Eddy, 2013). Community learning and knowledge in the American context is the awareness of occurrences society in and how community interactions shape knowledge as well as knowledge impacts on community relationships.
Therefore, in exploring professional learning further emerging from the community learning paradigm is attempting to evaluate how basic professional learning such as Registered Nurse/ Police Officer that, produce additional organizational learning features impact the American culture. From the time a person graduates high school professional learning is required in the American culture. It could be advanced that this criteria determines whether a high school graduate would be employed quickly or remains all his/her life job seeking. Essentially, Jeffs (2005) continues to contend in the text Informal Education: Conversation, Democracy and Learning that professional learning pertains, specifically, towards obtaining an understanding to function applying a skill such as carpentry, joinery, registered nurse, police officer or lawyer. This requires that the graduate attends an institution of higher learning. When the first phase of professional learning is completed other stages become necessary if the person seeks to advance in the profession (Jeffs, 2005). Ultimately, in this culture professional learning becomes a lifelong process. This learning phenomenon has immense influence American culture because the average population seems to believe that professional learning would help them live a reasonably comfortable life. However, many professionals become disappointed.
In the three foregoing paragraphs learning & knowledge and how it affects the American culture was explored using two key elements, community learning and knowledge along with professional learning and knowledge. Community learning occurs in social groups and organizations whereas professional takes place in formal educational institutions. It is designed to supply the labor market with skills. Knowledge is awareness of one’s environment, which contain people, places, things and issues. Knowledge is classified by the ways it was obtained.
