A twelve-step program is a group founded by Alcoholics Anonymous, which found it to assist people who have been facing challenges due to addiction brought about by alcohol. There are cases when a person cannot get enough advice and support from the people they think have the knowledge and experience of what they do. In most cases, the people addicted to alcohol tend to give up on life and lead a life with no sense of direction. Thus, the program comes with 12 steps that can be followed and implemented by the people facing alcohol addiction to battle the diseases effectively. The paper expands much on the twelve-step program aimed at assisting alcohol addicts to recover from the condition.
- The 12-step program benefits people who have been addicted to alcohol and those who have been facing challenges due to other people being addicted to alcohol. One of the benefits of the program is that it brings together people who have the same challenge of being slaves to alcohol. Therefore, they can share their experiences and develop strategies to overcome the challenge. Once the people are brought on board in one place, they are directed and guided by professionals who have tried the 12-step program, and therefore they can benefit from the program’s benefits. Thus, the program brings togetherness and everyday use, reducing the costs of dealing with each person simultaneously.
The program also brings the community together since all the people who had been facing challenges before due to their close family members, friends, or relatives being addicted to alcohol can enjoy a period of peace and stability when the challenges of the other people are dealt with. Cohesion and unity are enhanced when all people in the society are catered for by listening to things that affect them. The group also enables people who can deliver the same recovery procedure; therefore, chances to help others are created. The 12-step program is also crucial in providing a recovery structure that enables the affected [people to follow the guidelines and recover quickly.
- The role of the group leader is to devise a schedule and a timetable that is followed when undertaking all the activities and therefore manages and controls the group. They also appoint leaders who can handle other smaller groups who, in most cases, assist the people who have been addicted in the recovery process. A group leader also allocates time to different people who are set to speak and present their ideas during the training and forums meant to assist the people affected by alcohol addiction. The group leaders also call for meetings to discuss issues facing the group and determine some strategies that can be applied to help the people who have been addicted to alcohol recover and get back to their everyday lives.
- The group receives funding from the members who do it voluntarily. Nonmembers are not allowed to contribute to the group since when they do so, they are likely to bring in politics which might affect how the group runs and cause its downfall. Meetings are held in churches or other places that are not charged. The group was invented by two individuals who came together and came up with the idea of forming the group, which has now expanded membership to more than two million people. However, Bill Wilson Is credited with having come up with the idea of forming the group, which came to pass in 1935. It succeeded after several attempts to consolidate its members, and it was until the founders established that alcoholism was a state of mind and emotions that drive a person to drink. A proper structure on how to run the group was then formulated, which stipulated what was followed by the group to date. The meetings are attended through zoom and physically in churches and places designated by the group leaders. The conference aims to discuss the issues affecting the group and how the people who have been addicted to alcohol can be assisted.
- The ages of the members of the group range between 25 and 40. The reason why the ages are distributed that way is cause that is the age where most people are much settled with their lives and therefore have a source of income that they can use to fund some of the activities that the group does. Females are more than males because, in reality, females, especially women and mothers, have a helping heart. Therefore, they are motivated by assisting their children in getting out of mental slavery that has affected them for a long time.
- The 6th step is the one that touched me since it states that people should request God to give them the wisdom to overcome challenges. The step shows that the group recognizes God as the one who heals people even after the intervention of doctors and other health officers. The group continues to expand in all the countries where there are branches.
