In thisparticularcase, the mode of therapy is considered that of Family Therapy. Here two members of the family disagree on the approach to discipline their small children. The emphasis is that of building cohesion and looking at the entire family as a unit. There is a need to teach the children both discipline and respect for their parents but modern thinking is that this is achieved more by education and motivation as opposed to physical punishment. If the couple were having relationship troubles that affected or influenced their decision, making abilities, it is possible to introduce couples therapy. This is more about bringing the couple together such that the children become the focal point of concern and they work as a unit to address any issues.
In this issue, there is a need for Family Therapy. The bed-wetting scenario from the child may be the result of transferred anger from the parents arguing about finances and having a disturbing effect on the child. There is a need for the couple to address this problem (combined with couple therapy) such that they provide a loving, caring and supporting environment for the child. The lack of tension and anger transfer should address the problem. The important point here is that the problem is with the parents and not the child!
This involves the use of Group Therapy. This involves the boy’s acceptance of his new Father (parent figure). This can be a very difficult time for a 12 year-old who finds himself displaced from his natural Father, in this case through divorce. The family need to re-bond as a unit and this needs mutual cooperation by all worklng towards a common objective. This often involves an environment change and re-conditioning of the thought processes of the group. This is a time driven events change that requires a great deal of understanding,
This is the need for Individual Therapy and is the commonest form of therapy. In this instance, 1:1 therapy dealing with aspects of fear of crowded places i.e. Agoraphobia. This may require specialist treatment like that of hypnosis in order to more fully understand the cognitive conditioning that is driving these fears.
This requires individual therapy because it is a concern about an individual problem i.e. the perceived sense of personal failure because a person cannot advance in his career. This in turn is causing an isolationist problem because of a lack of confidence. This may progress towards that of group therapy in order to expose the individual to interaction with other people and create an environment where the individual can make a contribution with peers. This can sometimes be approached by getting the individual involved with community or social work in order to give back and help others. This has the benefit of creating both contribution, improving confidence and rebuilding self-esteem.
This involves the use of Individual Therapy in order to help the individual focus on personal goals, self-esteem and personal objectives. This can often lead towards anxiety or depression so it is best caught early be a suitable treatment program that involves individual counselling. This often is just where a person needs a supportive environment in order to help channel personal energies and focus on a sense of purpose. In some instances this is brought about by a lack of social interaction or peer group and as such would require group therapy in order to enhance personal relationships and expand relationships that create a positive environment to help the person focus. This can be as simple as learning to do something different with a small group i.e. learn to paint, learn to play a musical instrument, join a discussion group etc.
The four modes of Psychotherapy discussed here are:
- Individual Therapy
- Couples Therapy
- Family Therapy
- Group Therapy
