Experience is the best teacher. I have realized the fact behind this saying at a very early age and I could never be more thankful for it. Every childhood memory is considered a precious mark of the past that makes up a person. Personally, though, I could say that not all childhood experiences that leave a mark on one’s personality are pleasant. As for me, that one specific time in my life that marked my entire being was an uncanny moment of accident that occurred when I was just nine years of age. Relatively a dangerous play taught me what risk is about and how I should deal with it as a human individual.
As a child, like any other individual, I felt invincible. I cared for nothing but having fun and playing along with my peers and my sisters. Everything in life was simple and I viewed every single chance to become happy a chance to embrace the freedom that I have as a youngster. True, it is very natural for a child to think less of the consequences of the actions that he takes into consideration every day. Careless as every child is, I was also embracing the fact that I have the freedom to do what I want; not caring about what such decisions might bring me in the future. Independence is also among the most common attitudes that I embraced when I was younger. Although I was just a child, I viewed asking for help as a representation of weakness; hence, I preferred to do things on my own whenever I can. Dealing with the importance of the relationships I share with my sisters or my peers was not so much of a big deal for me. In fact, I did recognize the idea of accepting matters as they happen. Nothing mattered so much besides having much fun.
These idealisms in life as a young child changed within a single twist of events. It all happened while I was playing with my sisters one day. Pretending to be a lost cat on top of the roof, I decided to climb up our bunk bed and jumping to the ground hoping that I would drop gracefully and slowly as cats do. Well, as falling down as a cat is humanely impossible for adults; I realized such fact after I did incur the injury. The pain was there, the surprised look in my sisters’ eyes was unrelenting. Nevertheless, through all that happened, there was one thing that stuck into my mind through all those years, humans are not superheroes, nor do they have the capacity that cats have; when they take the risk, they have to suffer the consequences that comes along with it.
While on my way to recovery, learning about taking risks and suffering the consequences they offer was not the only lesson that was imparted to me by this experience. The days of my healing has become a source of strength and realization on my part especially when it comes to understanding how important it is to rely on others especially when needed. My parents and even my sisters were there to make sure that I recover fast; giving me their time and their effort, I felt how important it was to work side by side with others. Only during this time was I able to see the value of human relationships, especially that of a family.
As the pain eases down, I realized how fragile my life was. I could have lost my life within a single play. I could have suffered more if my family did not attend to me properly. I could have lost it all if those who love me did not support me. Going back to this memory, as I grow older gave me a foundation of belief that I carry in my heart up to now. Every time I make decisions, I become more aware of the fact that I have to value the future cost of such situations. I know better now to weigh the possible consequences that my decisions could result to. Looking back through how I fell on my chest and my face and how my family reacted to the matter, I realized how my decisions could affect not only me but also those who care about me.
Staying as careful as I could, I keep on reminding myself now how important it is to value life and the relationships that come along with it. Risk is a vital part of living, but handling it in a relatively careful manner could save me and those whom I love from an awful lot of pain and disappointment. True, the value of that memory and the lesson that it left my heart and my mind would always mark the person that I have become after a dangerous play.
Every time I look back to the day when the accident happened, the pain remains fresh, as if reminding me that in life, pain is inevitable yet it could have been avoided had I thought of my plan well. The injury of ignorance and childhood that brought about such an accident are the same factors that brought about the most convincing lesson that I needed to know about in life. True, although I still hope I did not have to feel the pain of falling off from our bunk bed and had not have to spend several days recovering from the injury, I would not have changed anything any other way. I know I learned from that experience so much that I was able to avoid issues of disappointments in life, as I grew older; something that I would not exchange for a moment of ease. Have I not learned about life from that incident, I could have suffered more emotional injuries as well as physical accidents as I grew older not knowing what risk is and how careful I should be in handling them in the real world.
