High school is a challenging place. Girls are very catty and change their loyalties and friends as many times as they change their shoes. The conversation is between to best friends, Cathy and Sarah, who at times act more like enemies. They are competitive and secretly have a crush on the same guy. At times, their conversations can be misunderstood because of the various fallacies that are used in the dialect. The following conversation it taking place regarding typical events that take place in the halls of high school:
- C. Hey Sarah how are you today? I can’t believe that Christmas break is over already.
- I know right! I so did not want to come back to school today.
- C. Did you hear we have a new English teacher? I believe her name is Mrs. Jones.
- S. The new English teacher is great. One of my neighbors told me so. (Fallacies of Generalization/Weak Induction)
- That is awesome, hopefully she will not be crazy about us using our cell phones in class.
- I know, how are we supposed to communicate? Pass a paper back and forth ha ha ha.
- I need a new cell phone, mine is acting stupid, and I am missing calls and texts.
- My last two cell phones didn’t last me a year. Every cell phone out there is a piece of junk.” (Fallacies of Generalization/Weak Induction)
- C. I don’t agree, my phone was working great until I dropped it into the toilet.
- I don’t know, I bought two phones this year and neither one of them worked.
- Sarah you are crazy, that doesn’t mean that all phones don’t work, it means you need to stop buying crap ha ha.
- I have to get to first bell, will I see you at lunch?
- C. Yes, I will text you and we will talk about where to go to get food. See you at 12:00
- S. Choi, see you then!
- C. So….. what are you thinking for lunch?
- S. I don’t know, something cheap and fast, how about McDonalds or Burger King?
- I went to McDonalds and got a cheeseburger that was greasy and full of fat. Burger King’s cheeseburgers are greasy so they must be full of fat. (Fallacies of Generalization/Weak Induction)
- Seriously, Cathy, that doesn’t even make sense, you say the stupidest things.
- Either you eat the cheeseburger or you anorexic. You told me you don’t eat cheeseburgers, therefore it is clear you are anorexic. (Fallacies of Presumption)
- I am not anorexic because I don’t like cheeseburgers. Seriously Sarah, look at the size of my butt, it does not scream anorexic.
- Ha ha, you are crazy. Well I am going to run to McDonalds to get a soda, do you want anything?
- C. “Can you go get me a coke?” (Fallacies of Language)
- Sure what kind?
- I’ll take a medium sprite please.
Later that day……………..
- Cathy did you see Billy is in my art class. I am so excited, I have ‘art’ to stare at all day.
- Sarah, Billy asked me to go out again. We went out a few times over the summer. I think we are going to make it official.
- S. How did I not know that? Ughhhh, you are so lucky. I guess I should say
- Thanks. He is really good looking and he is so fun to look at.
- Sigh…well have a good time.
Later that month………….
- S. I cannot believe you hooked up with Shawn at the party. When did you and Billy break up?
- C. We didn’t breakup and you cannot say anything. Shawn was a mistake, and I don’t want to lose Billy over it.
- You cheated on Billy?
- S. You need to give me $200 or I am going to tell him that you are cheating on him. (Fallacies of Relevance)
- C. I knew you were jealous that Billy asked me out and not you, but you are threatening someone who is supposed to be your best friend?
- That was before you showed your true colors and cheated on him. I figured I might as well make money off you doing dirty things too.
- You do what you want, I am not paying you to keep my mistake a secret. It’s not like telling Billy will make him ask you out!!
- Forget you Cathy, you deserve everything you get!
The Next Month………..
- I am so sorry I said those horrible things.
- Me too, I was just jealous that you had two guys I liked and I didn’t.
- C. Do you see that I am right? (Fallacies of Language)
- Yes Billy didn’t care you made a mistake, so I you were correct that he would not come after me.
- How are you doing in English?
- I am doing good, getting A’s.
- So you are still cheating on your tests? (Fallacies of Presumption)
- I never cheated on my test, unlike you.
- How did you find out?
- If you don’t admit that I should have been homecoming queen, I will tell everyone that you cheated on that test. (Fallacies of Relevance)
- Please don’t tell the teacher I cheated on the test, my mother has cancer and I have had to spend all my free time at the hospital. (Fallacies of Relevance)
