When many people hear the 7-year medical program, they relate to a period of a lot of reading and Medical Practice that is intense and meant to make a medical professional more competent. For me, I see it as an opportunity to develop a passion that has been with me since the 7th grade. Seven-year medical programs provide an opportunity for an individual to not only explore their academic capability but their resilience and true passion in the medical field. An interest is easy to develop, but to have it last for years and become a drive for a career path is less likely, but in this essay, I demonstrate that what started as an act of health grill to become my life’s ambition and goal. This is an account of a seventh-grader who evolved into a volunteer and has spent most of their life seeking a deeper meaning to being a medical professional.
My initial discovery of my interest to go into the medical field is tied to an incident that happened when I was in 7th grade, which involved first aid on a neighbour’s five-year-old girl with a bloody knee. At the time, the response that I took to bringing her home and cleaning her knee and bandaging it was based on my personal experience with bike riding injuries. Regardless I felt empathetic to her pain and was glad that she felt better, therefore, encouraging me to want to help more people. According to Chen, p 305, empathy is likely to decrease as one moves away from the preclinical years towards the end of medical school, especially for people who specialize in technological aspects of medical care provision. I believe going to medical school and particularly practicing one on one patient care is a lifelong goal and desire linked to my passion for helping.
Since it is not every day that one can have a neighbour who is injured, I started exploring more options to help the people in the community and society around me, especially those in need of medical attention. Volunteering at Garnett health medical centre in my sophomore year of high school did this for me and continued to increase my insight as well as my passion for the medical field. Some of the incidents that I interacted with stayed with me much longer, for example, my interaction with an elderly patient who had a leg amputation and her doctor and family. As with the case of the neighbour’s child, the family was grateful and had so much gratitude for the doctor, something that I identified as part of the Medical Profession where one can become a mentor or someone that society looks up to care for them.
The medical field is not just something I want to volunteer for once in a while, but it has become something that is a timeless passion and ambition that I seek to explore as a career and profession. They say to do what you love, and you’ll never work a day in your life, and this applies to the connection I have with the medical field, something that has even guided my subject choices and allowed me to particularly enjoy biology and chemistry as foundational sciences to a greater medical practice. It is poetic that the first person I interacted with suffered a bloody knee while an amputee contributed to my continuing passion for the medical sciences. Particularly orthopedics offers options for patients that we didn’t have before but is gradually developing with emerging technology and knowledge in the medical field.
Medical school will not only offer an opportunity for me to develop my knowledge and skills on treatment diagnosis and medication but will also be a lifelong opportunity to continue interacting with people from different walks of life and impacting life at a time. Howard, Patricia and Williams, p. 93 Established that medical school is an environment where various partnerships and agreements with other institutions improve the opportunities available for a graduate to explore their professional career. I believe that the medical program is the best fit for me to continue practising my passion under the guidance of seasoned and experienced professionals so that I can contribute to the improvement of health for all those that need it.
The Medical Profession and medical school for me have always meant the in-between of combining the appreciation of impacting human life and acquiring the necessary information and skills to fulfil this Duty. I am glad that I have this opportunity to present my passion and perspective and what I hope to accomplish in the 7-year medical program and afterwards. The desire to help people and pay their joy as well as gratitude is something that I believe can keep me going through my student years and more so as a practicing medical professional. I enjoy treating patients as much as I enjoy connecting with them and understanding their perspectives on the standard of care, which is something I hope to build through my experiences in learning and caregiving as I give back to my community.
