A Flu Clinic Project Donated by Scottsdale Health Care, Essay Example

Essay

For the second week rotation, we began working on a flu clinic project donated by Scottsdale Health Care. Because we were given short notice, we had to work diligently and quickly to inform our clients and staff about the free services the clinic was to offer.  Therefore, we sent hundreds of consent forms home with clients, to ensure that parents and legal guardians could sign and return them in a timely manner. Furthermore, we made hundreds of follow up phone calls to the client’s residences, to confirm that the appropriate people had received the forms. If they had not, we sent a second copy to their addresses or asked if they could stop by to sign consent forms at Gompers. We explained to those we called that their timely responses were needed because, although we had a limited time frame, we wanted to give every client the opportunity to participate.

We ran into two different problems over the course of this project. The first was that some of the forms had been completed incorrectly. The second was that, in some cases, we did not receive the documents that were to be attached to our consent forms. To solve these problem, we asked the staff members responsible for client transportation to check the clients’ bags for any return forms. We also left copies of the forms with our receptionist, to ensure that anyone who wanted to participate could sign up to receive flu shots. We also furnished the receptionist with instructions to let the public know that clients could receive flu shots for free, while members of the community could receive them for a fee of $25. Lastly, we made sure all staff knew about the project by sending each worker a memo.

Thursday, the day of the flu shot, was a very busy day. We started by setting up the gym, which was the largest space we could utilize. We made arrangements for the clients to arrive in groups, in order to minimize chaos and irritation. We also gave away lunch bags and stickers and held clients’ hands for emotional support while they received their shots. The event was very successful and we end up administering about 135 flu shots to clients, staff, and people from the community. Chris, the RN that I work with, baked dozens of homemade cookies for Scottsdale Health Care staff as a thank you for their hard work and humanitarian service. They were pleased that they had the chance to work with us and said we had done a good job and had made the project a smooth process.
