A Hazardous-Waste Site, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 613

Essay

A hazardous-waste site is going to be placed in your community. What information would you want to know about the site? How would you go about getting the information you need? Would you oppose it? Why or why not?

Hazardous waste sites, as the name itself suggests, intends to present an extremely dangerous course of operation that could impact the lives of the people living within the vicinity where the project or the business would be operated in. Relatively, these dangers should pose great concerns for citizens that are to be directly affected by the said operation. As a concerned citizen, I think that when I am to face such a problem in my community, I would need to know several information that may specifically indicate the dangers that the establishment and the operation it handles would have on the living condition of my community and the people thriving in it.

Among that data I would love to research upon is the exact location where the facility is to be established. This will provide me an idea on whether or not the stretch of the site where the facility is to be established would affect a huge area where residents are situated. Another data that would help in determining the rate of effect that the facility would have on the community would be knowing the actual process of the operation to be handled in the site and the materials that are to be used in the process. Along with this, seeing the waste-management plan of the organization would also be helpful.

Getting information would be much easier to handle if there is a permit that the local government would provide. Starting the information researched on the local government’s desk would be relatively helpful. However, getting information from the managers and operators themselves would be more direct and clear for understanding.

If the facility and the operation would have considerable high rate of effect on the community and its residents, I would willingly oppose its establishment and its operation. With the support of legal sanctions that protects the rights of the people in the community for better, safe and protected living, I would be willing to face the administrators of the facility with the support of my fellow residents in the community to come into terms of putting their plan on hold and reconsider relocation for the sake of the people’s welfare.

What role do soil conservation measures discussed in Chapter 10 play in pest control? What advantages does IPM strategy offer over current management techniques?

Soil conservation is an important measure of protecting the environment especially when it comes to undergoing hazardous procedures that may hurt the overall integrity of the soil to produce and support life. Considerably, the discussion in chapter 10 provides a vivid indication on how soil conservation could be handled in order to keep pests away from ruining or destroying a major mass of the crops being produced in particular agricultural areas.

One effective procedure suggested is the Integrated Pest Management or IPM strategy. There are instances when pests swarm areas where there are productions of crops. The availability of food that they could use as sustenance specifically attracts them towards a particular location. Notably, through IPM strategy, the number of these pests is lowered down thus aiming to control how they affect the overall production results of the agricultural lands where they are found. Through understanding the ecology of the soil and the areas considered for research and the cropping system that could be used to avoid pest swarming, farmers and crop growers would be able to control the number of pests and the rate of crop growth that they could yield from their produce.
