A History of the Modern Middle East, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 292

Essay

Modernity is a specific element that defines the current system of living that the world is subjected at present. For third world countries like the Middle East, it is often a challenge to take on the chance of embracing modernity as they would need to sacrifice several elements of their traditional living that would completely redefine their culture and the way that their people live their lives. The theory of developmentalism is something that Gelvin champions in his writing. According to him, this particular process of embracing modernity allows specifically strict nations founded upon traditions, culture and religion like that of the Middle East, to get into the trend of making sure that their society do not get left behind the face of development that modern living offers.

To be specific defensive developmentalism is the process that Gelvin suggests strongly. This process specifically adapts to the European systems of living and administration even when they have been used to live differently apart from such systems. Defensive in nature, this process allows these nations to protect their traditions and cultures from the supposed ‘westernization’ of countries embracing the options of modern living. This gives them a chance to follow a separate route of development that allows them to embrace a new form of modernity.

In a way, such procedure gives a distinct aspect of differentiation as third world countries take on a new recognizable reputation in the face of international relations. They become stronger as they serve a unique aspect of modernity and serve as leaders in their own ways. Given the strength and ample support from international communities, it is expected that third world countries like Middle East would be able to flow through the developments as imposed under the principles of global modernity.
