Population interventions differ from individually focused interventions because health care professionals need to consider different variables that cause health problems (Hufnagel, 2012). On a population level, professionals in the health care field tend to consider generalizations in order to gain a better understanding of the populations they are trying to serve. In obstetrics, this would involve studies of all women to assess their needs. For example, population studies with these groups could involve an understanding of the need for caesarian section versus vaginal birth in certain types of women. To ensure the overall health of women and their newborn children, it is necessary to understand which cases would benefit from either version of delivery depending on health factors and preferences. These population studies can be used to determine an adequate delivery intervention for a broad range of women because this understanding is based on a wealth of data.

On the other hand, many patients have unique needs that cannot be addressed using population interventions. For example, only a small percentage of women are likely to receive a caesarian section if they are obese because this makes the surgery more difficult (Machado, 2012). However, for an even smaller percentage of this population, there is a need to consider this method delivery in order to avoid further complications. This is not an assumption that can be made based on population data and must instead be made using careful consideration of the particular case in order to ensure the health of the mother and the child. Overall, it is important to consider knowledge of population interventions when crafting an individual intervention, but the two are not necessarily connected.
