A Letter From Gogol to Maxine, Essay Example

Pages: 3

Words: 895

Essay

Dear Maxine,

I do hope this letter would reach you in good condition. I know that this confession is quite out of the blue, but I might as well say it before you’d hear it from anybody else. Above everything, I would be the first one from whom you should hear my decision from.

You and your family have shown me so much hospitality and welcoming that I could never repay, and for that, I am so grateful. I would like to let you know that the memories we spent together are one of my own best. I have realized through this time what a wonderful culture you have and what a wonderful being you have become. You and your family made me grow into a better person and I thank you so much for that.

The time I have spend with you and your family is beyond compare. With you I realized what modern living could give me; what another culture could make me and what the world actually offers for my benefit. I have realized through these experiences what a better individual I could become. I have become strong under your care and I realized so much about what I am and what I could do. Maxine, all these memories are important to me and they will always be cherished within my heart. I will never forget the times I have spent with you, I know I would not because they will always be a part of whoever I have become through these years of staying with you and your family.

However, there are instances in life when the differences between each other seem to be so full that they have to be addressed. My culture and your culture are too different that I am finding it hard to see our life together forever. You might find my ideas shallow, but please do believe me when I tell you that I simply am going to save you from all the pain that these differences between us may result to in the future. No, I have nothing against you or your culture, and I hope you have nothing against mine either. I just really think it would be better for us to find better mates who would make us feel the best that we could for the rest of our lives. For a fact, I know I cannot be that man who can completely give you what you want nor what you need.

I wish you all the love and happiness that you deserve in the future and I hope that moving on from our relationship would not be that hard for you. You are a wonderful woman and whoever would be able to find you, I know he will love you more than I ever could.

Please remember, I want nothing but the best for you my dear Maxine. I have loved you and forever, you’d stay in my heart, not just as a memory, but as a confident source of whoever I have become while I was living with you. Again, thank you my dear Maxine.

Always Yours,

Nikhil

The rationale behind this letter relies on the fact that Nikhil or Gogol needed to tell Maxine the reason behind his decision of living her and going back to India. The life-turning event when his father died finally made it easier for Gogol to understand why he was named as he was and what particular appreciation he should impose especially in relation to the meaning of that name and the worth of culture that comes with it. I personally feel that it is important for Gogol to address such issue in his letter to Maxine; to be honest with her about what he feels and how he wants matters to turn out to be.

Observably, it was included in the letter why he needs to go back to India, why he needs to move away and move on from their relationship that they have shared. Knowing that he was pretending to be someone else when he was with Maxine, it could be realized that it might be hard for her to realize everything as it happens. Telling her about the reality in a letter is a little bit harsh, nevertheless, it is the best possible source of their relationship’s confidence specifically showing her that the connection they shared need not be put to waste. Instead, it should be considered as a worthy part of memory that ought to be kept into their minds fully. Assuring her that she will always be a part of his being and the memories they shared together with her family will always be treasured is a manner by which Gogol is supposed to give ample respect to the people who fully accepted him for whoever he wanted to portray during his stay in America.

Gogol needed to fix his life and to accept what and who he really was. Only through this will he be able to become the right kind of person to enjoy whatever life has to offer. Pretentions and keeping realities at the back of his head would never solve anything. At this point, this letter shows that he is just ready to make sure that his process of moving on would not only be good for him but also for Maxine whom he has shared his life with for a remarkable couple of years.
