A Narrative Explaining a Problem at Work, Essay Example

Essay

During the first days of a human’s life, it is of vital importance to establish a firm and tender bond with the parents. Hugging, holding, stroking the baby allow him to feel the warmth of parental care and to harmoniously develop further on. In cases when a baby requires additional care in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the task of bonding seems to be more complicated due to the specific environment of the Unit. Specialists try to ease the stay at NICU both for the babies and for the parents, allowing the latter to visit their newborns and to bring in different objects which represent homely warmth and parental love. However, parents are reported to be abusing this right by literally cluttering up the wards with what they think can help their baby feel at home.

Nurses and pediatricians have been complaining that garlands of rattles and packs of teddy-bears stand in their way when they need to approach the baby and give him the necessary treatment. Precious time is lost in clearing up the path to the baby’s cot, thus reducing the efficiency of the personnel. Moreover, as singing toys are popular, there is often a whole chorus of them performing in the NICU — a noise that would annoy even an adult, and that naturally causes a loud reply from the disturbed babies, depriving their neighbors of the needed sleep.

With such situation present, the stranger it appears that the parents do not display any willingness to make a concession to the staff and to reduce the amount of keepsakes in the wards at personal requests made by nurses. Therefore it appears necessary to undertake centralized official measures in order to improve the working conditions at the NICU and thus to provide a better environment for the newborns undergoing treatment there.
