Pages: 1

Words: 315

Essay

The middle ages were a period of massive growth and gain of power for many nations. Much of this expansion can be attributed to the great leader that these nations had who would never stop, regardless of the circumstances. Some of the nation that saw a major expansion include: Spain, England, and France. The advancement that England had in the 10th century was tremendous. Alfred the Great would strengthen this nation by reorganizing the Anglo-Saxon military and building a navy. His sons continued his mission of expansion and power by overtaking the Danelaw. Shires were appointed to administrative districts in order to keep control of regions conquered. William Rufus and Henry also played vital roles in England during the middle ages by establishing sheriffs and royal justice to control the people. Moreover, these individuals centralized financial administration which proved to be a majestic choice.

France and Spain similarly experienced major growth during this period of time through powerful leaders that instigated change and brought forward new reforms to their nations. France experienced much of its success and expansion during the rule of Louis IX. Much of the success that Louis brought forward is attributed to the changes he made in France. The internal policies that Louis created ultimately led to the creation of the parliament. In a similar way, Louis guarded the rights of the crown which allowed him to become a successful leader and consolidate power. The period in the middle ages where Spain emerged is known as the Reconquista. This period of tie began with the defeat of the Muslims in Alcama by king Pelayo. Charlemagne also saw much success during this period as a result of his ability to unite the Church. The Reconquista ended with Ferdinand and Isabella uniting Spain through Castile and Aragon and the fall of Granada. In short, Spain rulers found much success through the unison of their people.
