Essay

It was 2011, Easter Sunday 8:00 pm watching a play in a community town theater in Connecticut, Lorraine Hansberry“A Raisin In The Sun.” She was born in Chicago on the South-Side. I rather actually see the description and metaphors of the characters than reading in picturing them. It was about a struggling African-American family of three generations who they lived in Chicago during

World War II. A Kitchenette apartment where they have to share a bathroom with other families. The main character Mama (Lena Young) a Matriarch whose a strong will Christian woman believes that God is the solution in solving social problems and the negatively of humanity. Walter Lee Young,  Lena Young’s oldest married son and have a son too; believes money is the solution in living a better way of life. Beneatha (Bernie) Young is Lena’s youngest and daughter who believes success will get you far. Ruth Young Walter Lee’s wife believe s in her duties as a wife, mother and caretaker to their son Travis Young.

This point of this play how money change people. Lena Young receive a large sum of money from the insurance company from the father’s death. The purpose for the money is use to buy a house and for Beneatha to go to Medical School. Until one day, instead of Walter Lee putting the money in the bank; he chose in a bad investment and lost it. As far as his wife Ruth who was expecting and battling to make a choice not to keep the baby. Even though the money was gone it still didn’t stop Lena to giving up on the house despite the realtor tried to convinced the family not to move it because of their race. It was the one thing the family succeed since losing the money and Ruth decide to keep the baby.
