A Respiratory Therapist (RT) is one who assesses, cares for, and works with patients who have cardiopulmonary disorders. Mishoe (2003) conducted an extensive study of 36 practicing RTs. Her findings suggest that “critical thinking in respiratory care practice involves the abilities to prioritize, anticipate, troubleshoot, communicate, negotiate, reflect, and make decisions” (p. 500). What a practicing RT questions and sees in encounters with patients is quite important.

There are certain things that a respiratory therapist needs to ask a patient who is complaining of breathing problems. First, the RT needs to ask if there is any obstruction in the patient’s airway. Second, questions need asking to determine if there is a problematic airway history with the patient. Following this, the RT’s questions should involve a possible need for further examinations. If so, an Anesthesiologist needs calling for consultation. In extreme situations, the patient receives a procedure known as intubation, where a tube inserts into the trachea so that the patient’s breathing becomes machine produced. If this procedure is not required, questions that require yes or no answers are appropriate, because a person experiencing breathing trouble does not feel like getting into long conversations. Questions about any history of breathing problems provide vital information. Several examinations may follow, based on the answers provided.

There are certain things that a respiratory therapist needs to observe in a patient who is complaining of breathing problems. The RT will look for signs indicating that airway maintenance functions properly, that pulmonary testing procedures are called for, or that cardiorespiratory drug administration are needed. RT personnel practice wisely when they review patient medical charts and x-ray reports carefully. Questions may arise from observations that medical orders fall by the way while a patient is in hospital care.
