The patient’s autonomy is govern by the nature of the right of autonomy in which self-determination is used to protect the patient’s interest when she chooses to make significant decisions involving her care. The obligation of the hospital is to protect and treat the patient, keep her safe, and actively remove any harm. A patient expects to have a certain amount of responsibilities and rights when they are getting medical treatments. The decisions of the patients should be respected and upheld by the doctors and nurses where care is obtained.

When all parties are involved including the nurses, the patient, and family, than each can come to neutral consensus in which all parties can agree on what treatment will be the best for the patient. Communication is essential to avoid ethical conflicts, where there can be a breakdown in communication between parties, which can lead to strong feelings where problems can affect hospital accreditation, and more importantly the health of the patient.

The pain policies are in place to provide staff with the standards of practice in effective treatment and management of the resident’s pain. From the case study, the hospital followed the standards set by the regulators of evaluation, pain assessment, and management.

The head nurse reports to the doctor and interacts more with the patient closer than the doctor. The nurse has a moral obligation to advocate on behalf of the patient when it comes to managing pain and other symptoms for the patient.

The doctor should actively take a role in evaluating, rating, assessing, monitoring, and managing the patient’s pain through the use of which treatments prove more effective and safe for the patient.

A good principle for pain management for the patient follows is principle assessment which regularly screens the patients for pain why performing pain assessments, rate, monitor, and manage.

The issues that this case study covers are patient autonomy, beneficence, nurse’s ethical obligation and responsibilities, ethics of communication, and pain regulation with a patient that might have an addiction problem.
