A St. Patrick’s Day Surprise, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 393

Essay

Just as I was falling asleep last night I heard a clanging and banging outside in my back yard.  I looked out the window, but the moon was too low in the sky to clear away the darkness, and I could not see much of anything. I could see the shadowy outline of the shed where my dad kept his lawnmower, I could see that mom’s car was still in the driveway, but everything else was too black and gray to make out any details. Deciding it must have been a neighborhood dog rooting in our trash cans I ignored the sounds and went back to sleep. The next morning when I woke up I had completely forgotten about the noises I had heard. It was early on a Saturday, on St. Patrick’s Day, and the house was utterly quite. As I made my way down the stairs to the kitchen to pour myself a bowl of Lucky Charms cereal, I was still too sleepy to notice much of my surroundings. As I was munching away on my breakfast I suddenly remembered the sounds I had heard the night before, and I deeded to look out back to see what kind of mess the dog had made of the trash.

As the door to the back porch swung open I was overwhelmed by then sight that awaited me. Overnight every blade of grass, every plant, every flower, and every tree in my backyard had suddenly grown to gigantic proportions. The leaves and flowers all shimmered with a rich, brilliant green I had never seen before. I walked out into the yard in a daze, trying to understand how the whole world had turned green overnight. It was then that I heard a faint rustling coming from dad’s shed. Peering inside, I saw an amazing sight: inside a rusty old birdcage was a tiny man with an orange beard, dressed all in green. I used to as my dad why he never threw that old cage away, and he always joked that it was his Leprechaun trap. I ran inside, woke up my dad, and dragged him out to the shed to show him what I had found. Dad looked puzzled for a moment, and then a smile spread across his face. “Well, what do you know,” said my dad, “I finally caught a leprechaun!”
