A Time of Expansion, Growth, and Invention, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 285

Essay

The Middle Ages were a time of expansion, growth, and invention all over the world. Society would see various drastic changes that would change the world forever and would make us rethink the whole entity of what had been and would move on to history. With so much change going on it would only be a matter of time until entire cities would metamorphose into something new, something never seen before. WIth the immense amount of growth that was being experienced a single leader seemed insufficient to handle the mass numbers of people and so many cities evolved into self-governing bodies within a much greater entity. A whole new outlook was given to the term city in the way that it became a much greater complex. Previously, a city was seen as a piece of land that had borders all around it. The Middle Ages introduced a vision of the cities that represented them as large complexes that brought opportunities of freedom, anonymity, and invention. The urban life was also drastically changed during the Middle Ages.

As aforementioned, people began to feel an overall wealth of freedom within city walls during the Middle Ages. Population in the cities grew exponentially as a result of comfortability felt by the residents that inspired procreation. Churches and Cathedrals were the buildings of highest importance within city walls and houses were made of wood which often led to chaotic fires that would devastate the entire city. The sanitation during this time was very poor as excrements were emptied into the streets and often became critical health hazards. Moreover, people engaged in frequent alcohol drinking, disease was misunderstood and seen as a punishment, and leprosy began to grow as a problem.
