Ability to Manage My Time Properly, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 638

Essay

There are many activities that I participate in throughout the day that are responsible for consuming my time. For the purpose of discussing my ability to manage my time properly, I will focus on the time I spent in class, studying, on social media, sleeping, and working out. In order to be successful in school, it is necessary to ensure that the time spent in class is considered when making a daily schedule because this represents blocks of time that cannot be altered.

An additional consideration is that certain blocks of time should be set aside each day for studying, as this needs to occur regularly for me to be successful. An important consideration for this particular activity, however, is that the time I set aside for studying must be flexible because it could potentially increase during periods of time in which exams are schedules. I also believe that I must set time aside for sleeping and working out because these activities will allow me to remain healthy and utilize my remaining time effectively. One activity that I should cut down significantly on is my use of social media because it is very distracting and therefore consumes a lot of my free moments.

I have been somewhat successful in managing my time the semester. My schedule feels slightly overwhelming, so it is difficult for me to fully focus during study time because I am usually worried about the other classes that I am not studying for as well. This could have been avoided if I had established a study schedule that would allow me to be ahead in each class so that if I needed to focus on one class or fell slightly behind, it would be okay. In order to be successful in the future, I will need to create a more effective study schedule, consider how much time I spend with friends and family, and use social media less.

One of the time management skills I learned in class that I utilize is the creation of a calendar. While the calendar I use is not as detailed as the ones discussed in class, I add important events like class and study time to my phone calendar so I can be reminded of how I planned my time. In addition, I have attempted to multitask in order to use my time more effectively. For example, my meal time overlaps with my television time so I am able to complete both activities and feel more relaxed. When I study, I reduce interruptions by turning off my phone and staying in a quiet area. This helps me get more work done within the block of time that I have scheduled. Skills that I have not yet implemented into my schedule is the ability to know when I should or should not multitask and planning my study periods effectively. Some activities cannot be performed effectively if they are multitasked and I should do my best to avoid this. Furthermore, I should determine what will be studied at the beginning of each study block so I am aware of my goals.

I am surprised that I have spent a lot of extra time sleeping this semester. I feel exhausted from my daily activities and feel that I need to get more sleep to compensate. To avoid this, I will do my best to get to sleep at a regular hour and sleep for only the eight hours that are needed.

My experiences have provided me with the ability to help other students who are unable to manage their time. Specifically, I would recommend that they make a schedule of tasks, use social media less, and budget time into their daily activities for studying. Ultimately, students can all learn from understanding each other’s time management habits and adapting them in a manner that is suitable for them.
