Abortion in a Contemporary World, Essay Example

In a contemporary world, the cases of abortions have become more and more repetitive. Abortion is perceived as the easiest and most convenient way to get rid of undesirable pregnancy and child. Women were given an ultimate gift of bearing a life form, but an abortion lets them choose whether they want to give a new life or not. Abortion cannot be definitely good or definitely bad, for there are two camps actually providing sufficient support towards both of the points. Of course, taking somebody’s life without even asking does not sound moral and ethical at all; however, a woman may face certain obstacles in her life, especially in terms of financial instability, thus taking decision based on reason and logic instead of emotions. So, abortion can be a reasonable and logical way out, and sometimes the best one, thus they must be legalized.
At a certain point of life women can face a dilemma of unwanted child being under social pressure that affects them, which should not be used as an excuse, but women have to decide whether it is reasonable and pertinent to give birth to a child at this stage. Sometimes a mother cannot even take care of herself, either being simply and totally immature or ultimately poor. Consequently, it might be better for a society to let babies be aborted instead of having them brought up in poverty, misery and destitution, thus making this child suffer without any guarantee that it will not die from starvation or reckless negligence. Moreover, children who are neglected or abused are predominantly the ones that grow up to be drug addicts and criminals, because mothers simply were not ready to take such a huge responsibility. If government claims adoptions to be illegal, more and more women will refer to “back alley” abortions, thus putting their own lives at risk as well. “An estimated 19-20 million unsafe abortions take place every year, 97% of these are in developing countries.”(Grimes et al.) This supports the point that women pretty often make their choice for abortion, however, in this case, they make it secretly for it either is illegal or they just don’t want their peers or parents to find out. Consequently, “An estimated 68 000 women die every year from unsafe abortion, and millions more are injured, many permanently.”(Grimes et al.) Thus making abortion an illegal activity will not significantly lower the amount of abortions made, but will only endanger women’s lives. It may also happen that a young mother has some complications of her pregnancy that may result in unpredictable negative consequences (even death) for her and the child. In this case the choice is actually limited and the abortion is often made to save the life.
Personally, I would suggest abortions to be performed in cases of rape, to end pregnancies that will result in children born with disability or genetic abnormality, or to reduce the number of fetuses to lesson health risks when having multiple pregnancies. Nevertheless, each and every woman must have a choice as to whether she wants it to be done or not. However, I do not in any tend to encourage women do abortions, but I suggest that in some cases this activity should be stated as legitimate and government must not prohibit it.
