Essay

The term family is much more than just a simple word for me.  It holds a deeper meaning that is associated with a specific way of living that is very special.  We should each understand that there is a very special bond with the family that raises us and teaches us valuable lessons.  When times are tough, my family provides so much support and encourages me to accomplish many of my goals and aspirations, no matter how foolish or odd they may seem.  My parents want nothing more than to see me accomplish more than they did and have more benefits in life to realize my potential and achieve my goals.  It is very encouraging when the family trusts your decisions and makes it clear that they will always be there for you, even if they are thousands of miles away.

A family is comprised of a group of individuals that you never have a hand in choosing.  Parents and siblings can be very similar or very different, and none of us has control over how wealthy our family will be when we are born.  Still, I am the reflection of my parents and the lessons and experiences I have gained from them.  I have grown up and learned to overcome any problems through the support of my family.  Without a doubt, having the support of the family is very reassuring and provides such an inexpressible feeling.  Yet, family members come and go through life and the pain we feel when one member passes away can be very difficult to overcome.

The death of my grandfather is something I will never forget.  The experiences and feelings I had when he passed helped me grow as a human being and shaped my personality and character.  Nine years ago, my family and I felt as if our lives were over.  Without all of us grouping together to help support one another, times would have been very difficult to overcome with the death of my grandfather.  I grew up understanding why my family was stressed and confused over this event and how it forced us to bind together to get through it.  I started supporting my family in everything I could, hoping that one day things would be better.  This terrible event made me realize that we cannot get through things by ourselves, and we must have a very close support system through out family in order to help cope with difficult problems.

Furthermore, the death of my grandfather helped teach me that a leader is not just a person who has the power within a group.  Rather, it is an individual who regardless of his or her position, decides to support and look after everyone and not just focus on individual needs or desires.  Last year I was the junior class president, and this year I ran for the senior class president.  Even though I was not elected, a good friend of mine won the position and I have helped share many ideas with him in order to implement strong plans for our school and our class.  The experiences I have gained from my family have taught me never to give up on what I believe in and to provide support to my friends as well.  It would have been very easy for me to give up on what I wanted to accomplish as class president when I lost the election, but I have learned to persevere through difficult times and provide leadership to help others.  Leading does not mean that we have to be the main focus; it can also mean to be a strong supporter of our friends and family by not allowing them to fail in the most important aspects of their lives.
