Addressing Cultural Diversity in the Classroom, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 336

Essay

Jane Hendry’s article focuses on how cultural diversity should be addressed in the classroom. The author identifies the challenges found in a multicultural learning situation and proposes a way of overcoming them through peer tutoring and cooperative learning. She starts off her article in a right manner by stating out clearly the thesis and further supports it in the subsequent paragraphs throughout the article. Her discussions bring out her view of cultural diversity in the classroom and how it contributes to the discipline of education to the readers of the article.

The author introduces each way of overcoming the challenges by giving out an overview and acknowledging the research that has already been done to ascertain their effectiveness in the in the classroom. Her article should therefore be used as a secondary source rather than a primary source. She has also emphasized on the teacher’s role in the facilitation of learning, both in cooperative learning where students learn in groups and peer tutoring which involves on how students teach themselves. According to Hendry, a teacher should ensure an understanding of the content by a peer teacher so as to avoid wrong information to others. The author has also shown on how different teaching skills such as use of different learning styles among others in the attempt of overcoming the posed challenges.

The article is well written since it has extensively covered on these valuable methods of implementing a multicultural teaching situation where learners are offered with a diverse view of the content which act as a motivator for their learning. It only fails when it mainly focuses on the teachers’ role ignoring the learners’ role in learning through the multicultural environment and learners are the main focus in the learning process. I encourage the reading of this article by the teacher trainees since it is majorly based on the way teachers should promote learning among the learners by use of different methods.
