Advantage and Disadvantage of Tourism, Essay Example

Tourism is done for recreation purposes and services provision and it entails local services including, catering along with accommodation, entertainment and learning. A number of advantages and disadvantages alike are associated with tourism and especially to the communities of the host country.

One of the most remarkable benefits associated with tourism is provision of employment opportunities to the poor people. They are directed employment in service sector in hospitality industry including bars as well as restaurants. Consequently the living standards of these people are enhanced and unemployment index is decreased. Local people access opportunities for educational as well as economic growth.

Another remarkable benefit in this respect is that the tourists together with the local community can share some aspects of their cultures and consequently the scope of their understanding is significantly broadened. Proper implementation of tourism is a source of tremendous benefits in as far as the host country and the entire community is concerned (Burns & Andrew, 1995).

Tourism is also associated with some remarkable disadvantages. It has been documented to come with cultural as well as environmental degradation. Sand dunes face destruction as well as pollution. This has negative consequences to the residents as they are disturbed by the resulting pollution and discourages future tourism activities in the future. Tourism is also a source of undermining the culture of the host nation as a result of its commercialization. This is also allied to a proliferation of litter, noise, acts of vandalism as well as graffiti. In most cases, the tourists have failed to honor the traditional cultures of the host nations, a realistic situation that distresses members of the host country (Burns & Andrew, 1995).

After this, tourism undermines culture by commercializing it and this is often connected with increasing litter, graffiti, vandalism and noise – tourists do not always respect traditional cultures, which is sad but true.
