Advertising household product such as all-purpose stain remover would be an excellent choice for the play Macbeth. Indeed, in one of the most famous scenes in all of Shakespeare’s plays takes place in Act 5, Scene 1 in Macbeth when Lady Macbeth delivers her “Out, damn spot!” sililoquy, which reveals her subconscious, repressed feelings and delves into various of the tropes, themes, and symbols throughout the play. This scene features Lady Macbeth sleepwalking and hallucinating. She persistently rubs her hands together in the air as if she were washing them with water in a sink. Lady Macbeth exclaims, “Out, damned spot! out, I say!” The purported “spot” the protagonist refers to an imaginary blood stain she perceives on her hands as a result of all of the crimes and murders Macbeth and herself have perpetrated. When she states that “hell is murky,” she insinuates that she is already living on hell on earth.

Lady Macbeth is one of the most important and criticize literary characters in the corpus of western literature. She first appears in Shakespeare’s seminal play Macbeth when she reads aloud a letter from her husband Macbeth, telling her that she is his “dearest partner of greatness” who he owes his success to on the military field, which the three witches had forecasted. She opines that she admires her husband for achieving such greatness, and she conveys her desire for her husband to get everything he ever wanted in life. She is, however, cognizant of her husband’s intrinsic weakness, so throughout the play she shows a steadfast determination to see that her schemes are fulfilled through her steely will and prompt action. Such cruelty is waged in order to advanced her husband’s career. While such comportment limns her as anti-feminine, Lady Macbeth does exhibit some femininity as the perfect mother and wife. Indeed, she knows “how tender ’tis to love the baby” that milk her, indicating she has breastfed as was expected of her sex and cared for a baby with the tenderness mothers must show their children. Moreover, in Act II Scene II, Lady Macbeth expresses such feminine tenderness through her diffidence to murder the King Duncan with her own hands. She states she would have gone through with it “Had he not resembled/ My father as he slept, I had done it” (2.2). She is fully cognizant of her limitations because she is not afraid to express her feminine weakness, yet she also possesses the willpower to repress her “feminine emotions” for a transient period of time. The repression of her emotions are evident through her cruelty, which is evident in the seminal scene in which Lady Macbeth utters the famous phrase “Out! Out! Damn spot, Out I say!” It is then that the audience realizes that not all stains are visceral and tangible, as some of the most penetrating stains and wounds can never be healed.
