Affirmative Action in Employment and Education, Essay Example

Pages: 1

Words: 290

Essay

Affirmative action in employment and education is crucial for the promotion of level playing ground thus eliminating historical discrimination. The policies that promote affirmative action require that all the institutions must give priority to the efforts aimed at enhancement of opportunities for the groups that have been excluded in the society. The major areas of focus of Affirmative action entail education and employment. The policies of admission in higher education institutions must give room for access to the education chances to the groups that have suffered historical exclusion and the ones who are underrepresented. These groups of people include the minority as well as women. Affirmative action has been a controversial topic in the constitution thus eliciting heated debate.

The absence of affirmative action in institutions of learning as well as places of work would mean that most of the available positions would be occupied by the Asian Americans as well as white men who may be given preference as compared to minorities and women. This however is a contravention of the gains that are associated with an increase in diversity in the nation. It is vital that the future is shaped in the right way and the mode of allocation of opportunities determined. It is prudent to appreciate the power that is attributed to education and subsequent employment and the benefits that are associated with integration of education opportunities in institutions to accommodate people from diverse backgrounds. The primary objective in Affirmative action is engagement of people from all the backgrounds so as to embrace the benefits that are associated with diversity. Affirmative action should however not be mistaken with giving preferences to unqualified people, but it is prudent to reward on the basis of merit.
