Alcohol Is a Depressant, Essay Example

Pages: 2

Words: 420

Essay

(CT-1) Alcohol is a depressant that can create problems when misused. It decreases inhibitions, and can lead to violent and destructive behaviors.  (CT-2) The authors were attempting to warn of the potential negative consequences if alcohol is misused.  (CT-3) I used to think that only drunk and depressed people had had problems with alcohol.  (CT-4) But now I realize that alcohol abuse can happen to anyone, and often begins with “normal” social functions when individuals are young.  (CT-5) This article has helped me to recognize the signs of potential abuse in my friends and family, and how I might be of help.

(QL-1) The graph shows that 40% of young adults were engaging in binge drinking within the month of this study. (QL-2) The alcohol use rate for those in the 12-13 age groups = 1.1%.  The alcohol use rate for individuals in the 21-25 age groups = 69.7%.  The alcohol use rate for those in the age group of 65+ = 40.3%.  (QL-3) The age group most likely to use alcohol in the past month of data collection was 21-25.  (QL-4) According to the graph, alcohol use after the ages 20-25 only slightly, but largely remains the same.  (QL-5) Based on the article, I would assume that many problem drinkers suffer with dependency throughout their lives.  (QL-5) The abuse of alcohol gradually declines after ages 21-25.  The age groups 26-29 used alcohol at 65.3 %, 30-34 used alcohol at 62.5 %, and 35-39 used alcohol at 60.8 %.  Alcohol use increase among 40-44 year olds at 62.8%.  Alcohol use decreased in the age group 45-49 at 55.9%, but increased in the age group of 59.8%.  Alcohol use decreased in 55-59 year olds at 52.8 %, 60 – 64 at 50.9%, and dropped among individuals 65+ at 40.3 %.

(VC-1) The image is a bar graph that shows the percentage of alcohol use in relation to age.  (VC-2) The style of the bar graph breaks each bar into different sections to more clearly define current alcohol use, binge drinking, and heavy drinking in relation to age.  (VC-3) The purpose of the graph is to display the different types of drinking occurring in various age groups.  (VC-4) The graph offers a visual aid in showing the reader the prevalence of alcohol consumption in different age groups.  (VC-5) Even though the average use of alcohol is consistently high, the rate of binge and heavy drinking decreases throughout the ages.
